The attractive town of Pitlochry is often known as the 'Gateway to the Highlands', situated as it is between the gentle farmlands of lowland Perthshire and the increasingly wild and rugged landscape to the north. As such, it has long been a popular base for holiday makers and like the town itself, at Fonab Cottage you can have the best of both worlds. It is also readily accessible by public transport.
It has a very quiet situation right at the end of a little lane, an end-terrace property which is yet within 2 minutes walk of the town centre, with pubs, shops and restaurants within easy staggering distance. While there is no garden as such, there is parking right at the door, and a seat where you can relax in the sunshine and look out over the town.
Inside, it is compact and cosy, with a cosy sitting room, and new dining kitchen whicle upstairs there is a double bedroom, single bedroom and shower room.
Pitlochry has several claims to fame - its famous festival Theatre in the Hills, where you can 'stay six days and see six plays', its dam and fish ladder, and its distillery, as well as lots of interesting shops and good eating places, a golf course, tennis etc. Just up the road at Blair Atholl, Blair Castle can be visited, or do some upmarket shopping at the House of Bruar, (from which your credit card is unlikely to emerge unscathed!)
Fonab is the name of the hill which the cottage faces across the valley and it is only one of many in the area which beg to be climbed. Ben Vrackie behind the town is the nearest, while to the west are all the scenic delights of Lochs Tummel and Rannoch with the peak of Schiehallion and the Tay Forest Park to explore.
Here too you are right on the A9, which will take you north to Aviemore and the Cairngorms for walking, wildlife watching or ski-ing, and even on to Inverness, which can be reached in under two hours. Aviemore and Inverness can also be visited by train. To the north east, you can reach Royal Deeside and the ski area of Glenshee for another day trip. To the south, visit Dunkeld, and the Hermitage, where there are lovely walks along the River Braan as well as a spectacular waterfall. Just to the north of the village is the RSPB osprey hide at the Loch of the Lowes.
Bed linen, £10 of electricity and £15 of gas-CH are INCLUDED and towels may be hired. Sorry, no pets and smoking is not permitted in the cottage.
