The Salmon House has a peaceful courtyard location in the picturesque conservation village of Fortingall, about 8 miles from Aberfeldy in Highland Perthshire.
It has part of a charming conversion of an old stable block (Its sister property, Fortingall Stables, is just next door) and has been furnished and equipped with great care and attention for the owners' own use. To the rear, there is a terraced garden area (furniture) which backs right on to the forested hillside, affording glorious walks straight from the door.
Inside, the comfortable accommodation is on two levels. Downstairs , there is a cosy living room with dining area, wood burner and French doors to the garden, a very well equipped dining kitchen and cloakroom and upstairs two good-size bedrooms and a bathroom.
The well known Fortingall Hotel is within a stone's throw of the house, as is the famous Fortingall Yew in the adjoining churchyard. At over 4,000 years old, it is said to be the oldest living thing in Europe. 'Picturesque' is indeed the word to describe the village, which unusually for Scotland, boasts a number of thatched cottages. It is reached by a quiet, single track road which forks just beyond the village to meander up beautiful Glen Lyon, the longest glen in Scotland, or turns down to Loch Tay (2m), famous for its water sports.
This is a perfect spot for relaxing though those of an energetic disposition will find plenty to occupy them. Walking boots are a must, for there are lots of walks for all levels of difficulty. The roads along the valley and glen are quite flat, however, so excellent for cycling. In addition to the aforementioned watersports, there are riding stables on the banks of Loch Tay, and golf courses at either end of it. Nearby Aberfeldy offers a host of shops, eating places and a distillery.
The cottage is also well situated for touring. To the east, beyond Aberfeldy is Pitlochry (22m) with its Festival Theatre and Fish ladder from which the A9 will take you up to Aviemore and the Cairngorms, or south to Perth (39m). To the west, the pretty village of Killin (15m) again has shops, eating places and a golf course and, of course the Falls of Dochart to admire. From there it is only another 55 miles to Oban and the west coast.
Heating is by electric panel heaters and wood burner. Bedlinen, towels and electricity are INCLUDED in the rental. One dog by arrangement. Sorry, no cats and no smoking in the cottage.
