Anchor Cottage

One of the particular charms of the little village of Avoch (pronounced 'Och') on the Black Isle just north of Inverness, are the little lanes of picturesque fishermen's cottages which huddle side-on to the sea there. These all glory in the title of 'street' and all have Christian names. Along one of these, just a few yards from the shore, is Anchor Cottage, which has now been beautifully restored by the owners to make a delightful holiday home.

Overview

Though from the outside it appears quite small, it proves on entry to be surprisingly spacious. The cosy sitting room has a log fire, there is a separate dining room and a kitchen downstairs, while upstairs are two bedrooms, both with sea views, and a bathroom.

Outside, to the rear, is a little secure, enclosed, courtyard garden (furniture.) Electric central heating and double glazing ensure its cosiness.

The village has a beach and working harbour, a small supermarket and a pub. Dolphin-watching cruises depart from the harbour, for the Moray Firth here is one of the foremost places in the UK for seeing bottle-nose dolphins. Chanonry Point, which is the best place to see them, is only 2 miles from the cottage.

Map & Local

The Black Isle is a wonderful tourist area with excellent walks, cycle tracks and attractions such as the pretty village of Cromarty.

Those with an interest in wildlife will be able to see many species of birds in Munlochy Bay, a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). Otters, red squirrels and pine martens may also be seen in the surrounding countryside. The Black Isle is the setting for the introduction of the rare red kite and visitors should look out for them near the Tore roundabout en route to the cottage. They are easily recognised by their distinctive notched tail.

Further afield, there is Inverness, which can be reached in under half an hour, and beyond that, Loch Ness and the wonderful Glens Affric and Cannich. To the north it is only a couple of hours to John O' Groats, or head towards the west coast at Ullapool or Lochinver.

The haunting battlefield of Culloden lies just to the east of Inverness, as does Fort George, a perfectly preserved Hanoverian fort, on the far side of the straits across from Chanonry Point.

Please note: while we make every effort to be as accurate as possible, the actual position of the cottage indicated on the map above and the proximity of the amenities in the Local Info section cannot be guaranteed to be precise and should be used as a guide only.
