The little village of Reston (pub, shop) is most accessibly situated in the rich Berwickshire farmlands, only 10 miles from the border at Berwick on Tweed itself (all facilities, railway station) and a short drive from the A1 trunk road. Just about half a mile outside the village, down a quiet and leafy lane which only goes a few hundred yards further, is Coveyheugh Lodge, a charming little chocolate box cottage, which snuggles discreetly behind its hedge.
It stands at the end of the drive to the owner's Coveyheugh House. (The railway passes through the cutting in front of it, but is out of sight.) Behind the cottage is a conservatory, which leads to a secluded grass garden. There is parking to the side.
The interior is as sweet and cosy as the exterior would lead you to expect and is on three levels to accommodate the hill behind. On the entrance floor is a kitchen/diner and beyond the dividing stairs is a cosy sitting room with wood burner and a single sofa bed for an extra guest. Up the rather steep stairs is a pretty double bedroom and spacious shower room. From the kitchen, further stairs lead down to the conservatory and the back garden.
The owners have a holistic therapy centre and treatments can be arranged. There is also a wonderfully equipped gym alongside the cottage to which tenants have free and most usually sole access and from which Personal Training can be arranged on request.
This is excellent cycling country, and you are within easy cycling distance of the coast, the beach at Coldingham, and St Abbs Head, with its seabird colonies on the cliffs. St Abbs is also one of the foremost diving venues in the country, and home to a diving school.
Historic Berwick, with its Castle and barracks is well worth a visit, and from there you can explore the castles and glorious beaches of the Northumberland coast, not to mention Holy Island and Lindisfarne. If a day in the city appeals, you can catch the train up to Edinburgh and leave the car at home.
Inland, there are stately homes such as Paxton House, Manderston, the gardens at The Hirsel to visit and you can walk in the Lammermuirs to the west or the Cheviots to the south. Fishing, golf and riding are readily available in the area. The pub in Reston provides good bar meals.
Heating is by electric heaters (£10 electricity INCLUDED) and open fire. Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. Sorry, no pets, and smoking is not permitted in the cottage.
