Penrhyl is a substantial and spacious family house which occupies a dominant position right above the harbour in the picturesque village of St Abbs on the Berwickshire coast, about 13 miles north of Berwick upon Tweed.

It is situated in a quiet street, detached, in its own enclosed garden (furniture), with wonderful sea views from many of the windows. Inside, it is most comfortably furnished in a homely, traditional style, and, on three levels and with a versatile assortment of bedrooms, there is plenty room for everyone to spread out in comfort.  The sitting and dining rooms have a log burner and open fire respectively and there is even a piano on the landing!

St Abbs (shop/cafe) has long been a favoured holiday location. In addition to its pretty harbour, there is the amazing NT seabird reserve on the cliffs for spectacular cliff walks, and the lovely sandy beach at nearby Coldingham.

The little fishing port of Eyemouth (all facilities) is only 5 miles away. The nearest largish town is Berwick, right on the border with England and which was for many centuries a political football between the two countries. With its rich history, and fortifications is well worth a visit and you can continue south to Lindisfarne, Alnwick with its castle and gardens, and the wonderful beaches of the Northumberland coast.

To the north, there are the seaside towns of Dunbar and North Berwick to explore, and, of course, the magnificent East Lothian golf courses, including Muirfield itself. (Locally, Eyemouth also has a course.)

For walkers, the Southern Upland Way ends just up the coast at Cockburnspath, while St Cuthbert's Way runs between Melrose and Lindisfarne. The Berwickshire Coastal Path goes right past the house. There is also plenty of scope in the Lammermuir Hills to the north and the Northumberland National park to the south.

Inland, there is a fine selection of country houses to visit, among them Paxton House and Manderston. Edinburgh is only 45 miles away; why not give the driver a day off and take the train from Berwick?

Gas CH, electricity and bed linen are INCLUDED in the rent and towels may be hired. Sorry, pets are not accepted and smoking is not permitted within the house.
