This unusual and enchanting little cottage has a most peaceful situation on a 45 acre country estate between the villages of Earlston and Redpath, near Melrose in the beautiful Scottish Borderland.
Standing quite alone at the end of one of the drives to the Big House, it would have been the coach house and coachman's quarters in previous times. Nowadays, the lower part is used simply for estate storage so tenants will have the building all to themselves.
The accommodation is snug and full of character, beautifully and stylishly furnished and equipped. On the ground floor is a dining kitchen with an electric Esse range (looks like and Aga but is a conventional cooker. Upstairs is a charming sitting room with electric stove, a twin bedroom, double bedroom, and a bathroom.
The immediate surroundings of the Clockhouse are just as attractive as its interior. Just across the track is a new tennis court, complete with an attractive summer house/pavilion, both of which guests are welcome to use. The summerhouse is ideal for picnics and barbecues and there are numerous other excellent picnic spots in the woods. On another part of the estate, a short walk through the grounds, there is a riding school. The Estate has fishing rights on the river Leader and golf at any number of good local courses, the nearest of which is probably Melrose. The Southern Upland Way can be joined at Melrose, which also marks the start of the St Cuthbert Way to Lindisfarne, so walkers are well catered for. If a day on the beach appeals, you can be on the Berwickshire coast in just under an hour. Historic Berwick itself, the dramatic cliffs and seabird colonies at St Abbs, and the beach at Coldingham are all well worth a visit.
Earlston (2m) has pubs and shops, while Melrose (6m) is a popular tourist destination at the foot of the famous Eildon Hills and has an excellent selection of shops and eating places. At Earlston, too, you are on the A68, which will take you up to Edinburgh in under an hour and is also on a bus route to the capital if you would prefer to leave the car at home (recommended!)
Bed linen, towels and electricity are all INCLUDED in the rental. Sorry pets are not accepted and smoking is not permitted within the property.
