Overview

Winding lanes leading down to the river and a chain footbridge which links Gattonside with the town, just a short stroll away. Tucked away along one such lane is Hollybank Barn, a magnificent conversion of an old steading in the grounds of Hollybank House.

Chic, modern style is the keynote at Hollybank Barn and you can easily understand why enthusiastic guests return here again and again. Beautiful, polished, oak flooring and doors throughout add to the luxurious feel.

Downstairs, the sitting room’s French doors to the patio make it very light and keep it cool on hot days, while at the other end of the scale, the elegant fire (inset into the wall), makes for cosy evenings in. The dining kitchen is very stylish with modern units with elegant tiles above and the dining suite in light natural wood, again with French doors out onto the patio. Beyond this is the large utility/boot room and shower room.

The staircase leads up to a spacious landing, where the Velux and floor level windows let in plenty of light and which could be a pleasant alternative haven where guests can sit peacefully. Off this are the two bedrooms, both of which are restful and uncluttered. Both bedrooms have the added attraction of Juliet balconies which again give an airy feel. The stylish bathroom is fully tiled in mosaic tiles and has a fashionable modern suite.

Outside, there is a patio, garden area (with furniture) and ample parking.

Map & Local

Melrose is renowned, not just for its famous ruined abbey and the legendary Eildon Hills which dominate the town, but for its excellent eating places and interesting shops.

You don't even have to go that far for a meal out, as Gattonside itself boasts two prestigious restaurants, both within a few minutes walk of the cottage.

Walkers will find themselves within half a mile of the Southern Upland Way, while St Cuthbert's Way starts in Melrose and heads for Lindisfarne. Anglers have the Tweed practically on the doorstep and there are plenty of stocked lochs nearby.

Melrose has an excellent 9-hole golf course on the shoulder of the Eildon Hills and is just one of many excellent courses in the area. There are tennis courts in the park at Melrose and riding about 4 miles away at Cowdenknowes. Of course, this is the heart of rugby country, with the Greenyards at Melrose being the home of the rugby Sevens game.

For less active days, there is a wealth of stately homes, ruined abbeys, historic castles and peel towers to visit - the nearest is probably Scott's own home of Abbotsford, just four miles away, as well as some lovely gardens. The beaches of East Lothian, Berwickshire and Northumberland are within an hour's drive.

If you wish to visit the beautiful capital Edinburgh, you can take advantage of the frequent bus service and leave the car at home, or jump on the train at Tweedank (2 miles) and be there in under an hour.
