Set within the tiny village of Bentpath, this charming detached stone cottage provides a peaceful retreat with wonderful views over the Dumfriesshire hills, making it a perfect base from which to explore the area or just to sit back and watch the world go by.
Warm and inviting, the cottage has been furnished and equipped to a high standard. There is a cosy sitting room with comfortable seating and a wood-burning stove in a traditional fireplace to toast yourself beside. The choice of soft furnishings serves as a very tasteful reminder that you have crossed the Border.
The stylish dining kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of room for cooking and a charming dining area situated right beside another wood-burning stove. There are French doors out to the terrace so you can watch the garden in cosy comfort on colder days or dine almost ‘al fresco’ with the doors open.
All on one level there are two charming double bedrooms, again with splashes of Scottish charm. The elegant family bathroom has a large Victorian roll top bath that is perfect for unwinding and relaxing after a day of taking in the beauty of the nearby countryside. There is also a very modern separate walk-in shower.
Outside there is a spacious terraced area just a few metres from the River Esk (some care required) that is accessed via the patio doors from the dining area. Here you can enjoy a glass of whisky with just the sound of the river and the bleating of the sheep for company. There is also a further grassed garden area.
If you do manage to tear yourself away from this idyllic haven, there are wonderful riverside walks on the doorstep and a variety of restaurants and shops can be found close by in the riverside town of Langholm (6 miles).
Nearby Lockerbie has excellent facilities and pretty country roads will lead you to Lochmaben with its three scenic lochs with plenty of opportunities for sailing, fishing, cycling and walking. As a contrast, the small historical spa town of Moffat is perfect if you want to find shops selling local goods and has a wide choice of places for morning coffee or afternoon tea.
Just over an hour away is the beautiful Solway Coast with its two hundred miles of coastline, fine sandy beaches and opportunities for sailing and water sports. Along the way why not stop off at the historic town of Annan? Here you will find its 176 year old bridge with graceful arches and Bridge House, which is considered to be one of the finest town houses in Scotland.
Drumlanrig Castle and Country estate, set on the spectacular 90,000 acre Queensbury Estate, can also be easily reached. As well as the castle there are marked paths and woodland trails for wildlife enthusiasts and for walkers and mountain bikers of all abilities.
