In the south-west of Scotland, picturesque River Cottage has a delightfully rural location in the Dumfriesshire hills some 5 miles north of Lockerbie, and 8 miles from The Pan-Am Memorial Chapel at Tundergarth.  Snug and cosy, it is reached by about a quarter of a mile lane from the B723 quiet country road leading to Eskdalemuir, and sits in a mature, enclosed garden (furniture) with an open terrace just 50 metres from the Dryfe Water.

The owner is an architect, and his expertise and eye for decoration is everywhere apparent in the cottage, which  is fitted and furnished to the highest of standards.   An arch from the cosy sitting room leads to an elegant dining area.  The kitchen contrives to be both modern and full of character; the bedroom is quite luxurious - even the shower room has obviously had a great deal of care and attention lavished on it!

Both inside and out, then, this is a cottage which is ideal for two people seeking a quiet retreat for a special holiday or a honeymoon .  There are extensive riverside walks from the cottage and a licence for fishing is obtainable at Loch Maben post office.  A variety of eating places, shops and ice-rink (in season) can be found at Lockerbie.  The pretty town of Moffat is just 20 minutes up the road; Dumfries is 15 miles; and the historic Border town of busy Carlisle is a half-hour's drive south.  The Solway coast, with sandy beaches and the delightfully named attractions of Caerlaverock Castle and Sweetheart Abbey, can be reached within the hour; while the A74(M) from nearby Lockerbie provides rapid access to North and South.

Those considering a Gretna wedding will be interested to know that the cottage is just 20 minutes away - and would be just right for a honeymoon!

Heating is by electric night-storage heaters (£10 INCLUDED), and solid fuel multi-fuel stove (starter pack INCLUDED).  Bed-linen and towels are INCLUDED.  Up to two well behaved pets are welcome by arrangement.  No smoking within the cottage.

Lovely cottage in a quiet, relaxing area. No rushing, no phones - heaven! Just what the three of us needed. The cottage is lovely all round and the garden is excellent. The owners are never intrusive but always available and ready to help.

What a lovely week. Really appreciated the peace and quiet and being able to stroll out of the cottage and along the stream or up in to the hills. The fire has been great as it's stayed in all week and kept the cottage lovely and cosy.

The peace and quiet is so nice to have. The cottage is perfect in every way. We walked up alongside the river every day.

The friendly welcome, the warmth of the lovely fire and the welcoming touches made our first impressions very happy ones.. We have sampled self-catering cottages before but have NEVER been so comfortable and cosy. Much thought has gone in to making the cottage as much a home from home as possible - and spotlessly clean. Had an utterly relaxed and peaceful stay. We think this is an idyllic setting...the area is lovely.

We have had a peaceful and relaxing week here. Cottage is very well-equipped and we found all we could need during our week. The location is perfect. Our dog loved sleeping in front of the fire and we made the most of the very useful walking guides. We have seen eagles, foxes, huge caterpillars and standing stones, then came back to a cosy cottage at night. Highly recommended!

We have had a very relaxing week. Cottage very cosy. Loved the dining area. We have enjoyed exploring the surrounding area which is very pretty, especially with all the autumnal colours. Thank you for letting us stay at your lovely cottage and we look forward to a return visit in the not too distant future.

Watson party, Birmingham 05/01/2010

We were lucky enough to arrive just after a heavy snowfall. Our hosts could not have been more welcoming or charming. The surrounding countryside was magical and brought back fond memories of childhood and tales of the Snow Queen. If you get to Dumfries, be sure to take a pint in the snug of The Globe (dogs allowed). A lovely cottage in a lovely setting.

Lewis party, Tyne & Wear 05/09/2009

What can we say: we were here in June and loved it so much we decided to come back for a week and weren't disappointed. Whatever the weather there is still lots to do, or just chill out. Try the Lochmaben walks around the loch and golf course. As usual, the owners were the perfect hosts and are there if needed. Hope to return next year.

A huge thank you to Gary and Margaret for making our stay at River Cottage such a lovely experience. We have had an amazing time and will relate this to all our friends. We are going to miss so much....our friendly pheasant, the mixture of delightful birds and of course the countryside. A very tranquil and peaceful week and one that we will not forget.
