In the south-west of Scotland, picturesque River Cottage has a delightfully rural location in the Dumfriesshire hills some 5 miles north of Lockerbie, and 8 miles from The Pan-Am Memorial Chapel at Tundergarth.  Snug and cosy, it is reached by about a quarter of a mile lane from the B723 quiet country road leading to Eskdalemuir, and sits in a mature, enclosed garden (furniture) with an open terrace just 50 metres from the Dryfe Water.

The owner is an architect, and his expertise and eye for decoration is everywhere apparent in the cottage, which  is fitted and furnished to the highest of standards.   An arch from the cosy sitting room leads to an elegant dining area.  The kitchen contrives to be both modern and full of character; the bedroom is quite luxurious - even the shower room has obviously had a great deal of care and attention lavished on it!

Both inside and out, then, this is a cottage which is ideal for two people seeking a quiet retreat for a special holiday or a honeymoon .  There are extensive riverside walks from the cottage and a licence for fishing is obtainable at Loch Maben post office.  A variety of eating places, shops and ice-rink (in season) can be found at Lockerbie.  The pretty town of Moffat is just 20 minutes up the road; Dumfries is 15 miles; and the historic Border town of busy Carlisle is a half-hour's drive south.  The Solway coast, with sandy beaches and the delightfully named attractions of Caerlaverock Castle and Sweetheart Abbey, can be reached within the hour; while the A74(M) from nearby Lockerbie provides rapid access to North and South.

Those considering a Gretna wedding will be interested to know that the cottage is just 20 minutes away - and would be just right for a honeymoon!

Heating is by electric night-storage heaters (£10 INCLUDED), and coal burning stove (starter pack INCLUDED).  Bed-linen and towels are INCLUDED.  Up to two well behaved pets are welcome by arrangement.  No smoking within the cottage.

By far the best cottage we have stayed in. Well equipped, warm and welcoming. The flowers are a very special touch. The dogs loved the walks and we enjoyed getting away from it all. Many thanks to Margaret and Garry for providing such a wonderful respite which we will recommend to all family and friends.

Lovely cottage in a quiet, relaxing area. No rushing, no phones - heaven! Just what the three of us needed. The cottage is lovely all round and the garden is excellent. The owners are never intrusive but always available and ready to help.

The friendly welcome, the warmth of the lovely fire and the welcoming touches made our first impressions very happy ones.. We have sampled self-catering cottages before but have NEVER been so comfortable and cosy. Much thought has gone in to making the cottage as much a home from home as possible - and spotlessly clean. Had an utterly relaxed and peaceful stay. We think this is an idyllic setting...the area is lovely.

Coutts party, Cleveland 19/09/2009

We have had a peaceful and relaxing week here. Cottage is very well-equipped and we found all we could need during our week. The location is perfect. Our dog loved sleeping in front of the fire and we made the most of the very useful walking guides. We have seen eagles, foxes, huge caterpillars and standing stones, then came back to a cosy cottage at night. Highly recommended!

Siddall party, Cheshire 23/10/2009

We have had a very relaxing week. Cottage very cosy. Loved the dining area. We have enjoyed exploring the surrounding area which is very pretty, especially with all the autumnal colours. Thank you for letting us stay at your lovely cottage and we look forward to a return visit in the not too distant future.

Watson party, Birmingham 05/01/2010

We were lucky enough to arrive just after a heavy snowfall. Our hosts could not have been more welcoming or charming. The surrounding countryside was magical and brought back fond memories of childhood and tales of the Snow Queen. If you get to Dumfries, be sure to take a pint in the snug of The Globe (dogs allowed). A lovely cottage in a lovely setting.

Lewis party, Tyne & Wear 05/09/2009

What can we say: we were here in June and loved it so much we decided to come back for a week and weren't disappointed. Whatever the weather there is still lots to do, or just chill out. Try the Lochmaben walks around the loch and golf course. As usual, the owners were the perfect hosts and are there if needed. Hope to return next year.

A huge thank you to Gary and Margaret for making our stay at River Cottage such a lovely experience. We have had an amazing time and will relate this to all our friends. We are going to miss so much....our friendly pheasant, the mixture of delightful birds and of course the countryside. A very tranquil and peaceful week and one that we will not forget.

River Cottage turned out to be just what we've seen on the internet and even better. We enjoyed our stay in this cosy little cottage. We think Southern Scotland is undervalued - it is absolutely fabulous. We recommend Bladnoch Distillery in Wigtown - very small but very nice. We also enjoyed Drumlanrig Castle,Edinburgh and of course the Scottish countryside. Thanks again for everything!

Mark & Lesley, Glasgow 10/07/2010

Thanks for a lovely holiday. The cottage was ideal. We got married in Gretna Green on the Monday of our stay so made the holiday very special. We had a very relaxing time. Our dog Jack loved the river and went swimming every day.

Paul McCullagh, Glasgow 03/07/2010

Cottage was perfect. Some lovely touches that make you feel at home. The wine and tea tray were very much appreciated. A great base to explore the countryside around this part of Scotland. The dogs loved it! Hope to return soon. Thank you.

Turnbull party, Edinburgh 19/06/2010

Amazing weather. No rain for a week! Enjoyed the peace and quiet. Had lots of good walks in the area. Our 2 dogs loved the garden and the local river. Complimentary wine and tea tray was fab. Will be back again.

Grindey party, Cheshire 28/08/2010

Relaxing stay. Recharged our batteries again after our stay here in April. The weather has been fantastic. We've been on plenty of walks and the dogs loved playing in the river. Went to the Red Kite Feeding Station -it's a must - in Lauriston. Thanks for the wine - it went down a treat!

Si and Jan, Cleveland 21/08/2010

Had a great week. Weather was very kind to us. Cottage is very comfortable - and it comes with wine! Saw the red squirrel a couple of times. Nice countryside to tour around - Moffat well worth a visit. Fished on the Annan a few times. Dogs had a great time - loads of fresh air and snoozing. Thank you very much.

Farr Family, Fife 14/08/2010

We have thoroughly enjoyed our week here. A very well-equipped cottage with very considerate hosts - not many cottages come with wine & washing up liquid! Activity highlights of the week were walking round the Devil's Beeftub just north of Moffat, picnicking along the river at the ford and wandering around the centre of Dumfries. River Cottage is a great spot - the fantastic old trees along the riverside are fabulous.

Williams party, Staffordshire 09/10/2010

We have had a really good week starting with the very warm welcome from the owners, a lovely welcome tray and a much enjoyed bottle of wine. Cottage provided all our needs and although OAP's, we found it very romantic. This has been one of the best holidays ever and we hope to be back as soon as possible. Thank you

P Donnelly, North Yorkshire 03/09/2011

A very warm welcome. A lovely cottage in a beautiful and tranquil setting. Many wonderful places to visit. The nature reserve at Lockerbie was very pleasant. Altogether a very relaxing and enjoyable week. Enjoyed a few drams as well!
