Set amid the parkland of a country estate, just 5 miles from Melrose in the Scottish Borders, Linthill House is a much-loved family home, now substantially refurbished and made uniquely available as a holiday home for those who would appreciate a taste of gracious living in beautiful surroundings.
Its public rooms comprise a large and comfortable drawing room, an elegant hall with a fine grand piano, a dining room seating 16, and a magnificent games room with billiard table and table tennis. All these rooms have open fires. The spacious breakfasting kitchen is well equipped and there is an additional utility room with freezer and washing machine. Turning staircases lead to various bedrooms and suites upstairs, which combine comfort with traditional character. It is an ideal venue for family reunions and for groups of friends and families wishing to holiday together.
The fine 18th century house is reached by almost a mile of private drive. Tenants can wander through the grounds, picnic by the ponds (they may also try their hand at some rough trout fishing on the river or the pond) and dream on the romantic bridges. Children can give their imagination full rein as the play outside and will find it all quite idyllic. Please note, however, that the ponds are not suitable for swimming.
From the end of the drive it is just a 10 minute stroll into the nearby village of Lilliesleaf (2 pubs). Melrose is a ten minute drive. It is one of the most attractive towns in the Borders, lying between the Tweed and the lovely Eildon Hills. With its ruined abbey, little theatre, many interesting shops and a superb range of eating places, it will cater for most needs. It has a 9-hole golf course on the shoulder of the Eildon, tennis courts in the park, and of course, its famous rugby ground, home to many a Scots internationalist and the birthplace of the sevens game. The Melrose Sevens in April draw teams from all over the world.
Linthill is just over an hour's drive from Edinburgh (or leave the car and take the regular bus service from Melrose.) It is also little more than an hour from the coast, the sandy beaches at Coldingham and the dramatic cliffs at St Abbs, with their seabird colonies and where there is also a diving school. The many stately homes, ruined abbeys, and castles (ruined and otherwise) of the region, too, are well worth a visit.
Heating is by oil-fired central heating (6 hours per day INCLUDED) and open fires. Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. Up to three well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement. (There is a double dog kennel.) A refundable householder's deposit will be required. Discounts may be available for smaller parties. Smoking is not permitted in the house.
Linthill House can comfortably accommodate up to 16 guests, and there are three additional cottage on the estate offering extra accommodation for up to 14 more guests.
