Nestling high in the hills above the little Borders hamlet of Ashkirk, (pub) between Galashiels and Hawick, is Wollrig Cottage. Built in traditional style and standing in its own enclosed and sloping gardens (furniture), with a little stream tumbling through it under a quaint humpback bridge, it could have come right out of a fairytale and does indeed look good enough to eat!
Inside, it is also perfectly in keeping. There is a snug sitting room with comfy chairs and an open fire, a large and beautifully furnished sunroom, farmhouse-style kitchen-diner and upstairs, two attractive bedrooms, one en-suite. Double glazing and Oil fired CH ensures its cosiness.
Easily accessible from the main A7 Carlisle-Edinburgh trunk road, Wollrig is a perfect base for exploring this delightful area. If you don't want to go far, there are lovely walks right from the door. If you'd rather do it on four legs, there is a riding school at the bottom of the hill at Ashkirk, or if you'd rather walk in pursuit of a wee white ball, there is an excellent golf course at the Woll, just a mile or so away, and plenty more within a 5 mile radius. Fishing is available at Clerklands fly fishery (4m) or in the lochs (by permit) round about. Hawick (8m all facilities) has a leisure centre and cashmere outlets; Galashiels (11m) has a cinema. The nearest shops, tennis courts etc. are at Selkirk (5m).
The area is steeped in history and awash with stately homes, keeps and castles, all open to the public. There are attractive gardens to visit at Dawyck and Kailzie, near the pretty town of Peebles (25m), or you can make a break for the coast and the excellent beaches at Coldingham or Berwick. You can also be in Edinburgh in just over the hour.
Heating, electricity, bed linen and towels are all INCLUDED. Up to two well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement.
