Nestling high in the hills above the little Borders hamlet of Ashkirk, (pub) between Galashiels and Hawick, is Wollrig Cottage.  Built in traditional style and standing in its own enclosed and sloping gardens (furniture), with a little stream tumbling through it under a quaint humpback bridge, it could have come right out of a fairytale and does indeed look good enough to eat!

Inside, it is also perfectly in keeping.  There is a snug sitting room with comfy chairs and an open fire, a large and beautifully furnished sunroom, farmhouse-style kitchen-diner and upstairs, two attractive bedrooms, one en-suite.  Double glazing and Oil fired CH ensures its cosiness.

Easily accessible from the main A7 Carlisle-Edinburgh trunk road, Wollrig is a perfect base for exploring this delightful area.  If you don't want to go far, there are lovely walks right from the door.  If you'd rather do it on four legs, there is a riding school at the bottom of the hill at Ashkirk, or if you'd rather walk in pursuit of a wee white ball, there is an excellent golf course at the Woll, just a mile or so away, and plenty more within a 5 mile radius.  Fishing is available at Clerklands fly fishery (4m) or in the lochs (by permit) round about.  Hawick (8m all facilities) has a leisure centre and cashmere outlets; Galashiels (11m) has a cinema.  The nearest shops, tennis courts etc. are at Selkirk (5m).

The area is steeped in history and awash with stately homes, keeps and castles, all open to the public.  There are attractive gardens to visit at Dawyck and Kailzie, near the pretty town of Peebles (25m), or you can make a break for the coast and the excellent beaches at Coldingham or Berwick.  You can also be in Edinburgh in just over the hour.

Heating, electricity, bed linen and towels are all INCLUDED.  Up to two well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement.

Have stayed in a lot of cottages around the country and this must rate as one of the best. Has everythingyou could need. En-suite is great. Lovely set out garden with lots of birds. Weather wasn't great but didn't stop us from getting out and about the Border towns.

What a beautiful cottage! Totally comfortable and probably the best equipped holiday home we have stayed in. Great attention to detail. We loved the birds, lambs & most of all, the burn.

Another wonderful week at Wollrig cottage. So calm, refreshing & peaceful with perfect weather for walking - the only complaint - time went so quickly!

A thoroughly enjoyable holiday in a very comfortable cottage. Our first visit to this beautiful area but will definitely return.

What a wonderful little cottage this is and its location is perfect too. Walked from Dryburgh Abbey to Kelso Abbey during the week. Plenty of places to visit. All sad to be leaving (again) but will be back.

Rowland party, West Yorkshire 08/11/2009

The perfect place for our honeymoon. The cottage is so picturesque and in such lovely surroundings. We travelled to Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as Merose and Hawick and to come back to the warmth of the cottage and the peace and quiet was just heavenly.

McDonald party, Falkirk 17/06/2012

Had a most enjoyable week at Wollrig. Loved the cottage! Spent most of the time in the sun lounge watching the birds and the beautiful stream running through the garden. The en-suite shower is fantastic! Loved the welcome tray in the kitchen on our arrival - beautiful touch. Woodpecker, pheasant and nuthatch graced us with a visit too! Definitely one to return to.

Brylski party, Germany 24/06/2012

We spent a most enjoyable week at the wonderful Wollrig. Birdwatching for breakfast and in the afternoon was lovely. We visited Melrose, Kelso and Dryburgh Abbeys - superb. Roslyn Chapel was wonderful and we spent relaxing hours in the gardens of Mellerstain, Dawyck, Prioirwood and Kalzie. Thankyou Mary for the warm welcome and the clean and cosy cottage. We'll come back next year.
