Tigh Ban Cottage is the sweetest little whitewashed cottage imaginable, which has a glorious situation on the quiet western side of the Knapdale peninsula near Tarbert in Argyll.

From this coast there are truly breathtaking views across the Sound of Jura to the island of Jura itself and to Islay beyond.

Inside the cottage has been completely renovated to a high standard and makes a lovely hideaway for two people. Considering it was once a humble but ‘n’ ben, it punches well above its weight in terms of space and style. The open plan living area has a dramatic, exposed stone wall in the seating area with its wood-burning stove recessed into it and patio doors that lead out to the rear garden and flood the room with light. There is also a desk in one corner that is perfect for those who can’t bear to get entirely ‘away from it all’ and want to set up their laptop.

The kitchen area is well-equipped and beautifully fitted with a door leading out to the side of the house. Guests even have a choice of where to eat – at the breakfast bar which separates the kitchen from the rest of the living area or at the more conventional dining table. The beautiful wood flooring throughout the living area bears witness to the quality of the cottage and there is underfloor heating to keep it cosy.

The bedroom, with its elegant light and airy feel, is quite a romantic room and next door is the modern bathroom which is very stylishly presented with a high ceiling and roof window that give a great sense of space. There are even solar panels for the hot water, making the cottage eco-friendly too.

Outside there is ample parking right at the door with sheep grazing quietly over the dry stone dyke opposite. To the rear there is a gravelled garden area (with furniture) that is an ideal spot for enjoying an evening drink.

Tigh Ban also makes a perfect base for those wishing to attend local weddings. The wedding venue at Crear is close by and in winter the cottage lets from Friday to Friday to accommodate guests attending weddings.

Map & Local

There is something for everyone in this beautiful part of the world - splendid walking, riding, sailing, cycling - the list goes on.

You can also indulge in a spot of island hopping. From Claonaig in summer you can take the ferry across to Lochranza on Arran, from Kennacraig to Islay or from Tayinloan to Gigha.

Tarbert is well known for its fish and seafood and has a number of restaurants and shops. Heading south, you can go right down the Mull of Kintyre peninsula, where there is a superb beach (beloved of canoeists, surfers and kite surfers) and a golf course at Machrihanish. Campbeltown, 'the furthest town from anywhere' still has its own distillery. Going one way at least by the lesser known east coast single track road will afford you amazing views of Arran and take you past the pretty village of Carradale.

To the north, you have a choice of routes from Lochgilphead to explore - either up the side of Loch Fyne to the Crarae gardens and Inveraray or through historic Kilmartin Glen with its 5,000 year old remains and up to Loch Awe and Oban.

However, it may well be that you will be content to snuggle up in Tigh Ban and enjoys its comfort and the charms of the immediate surroundings.

Bed linen is INCLUDED and towels are available for hire. The first £10 of electricity INCLUDED with any additional usage payable by meter reading at the end of your stay. Heating is by oil central heating (INCLUDED) and wood burning stove (starter pack INCLUDED). Water is from a private source which is UV filtered and regularly tested; however (as is typical in many parts of Scotland) it can become discoloured, particularly after heavy rainfall. Guests may therefore prefer to bring bottled water to drink. WiFi is available, subject to provider, at a charge of £15 per week. A maximum of 1 dog is welcome at an additional charge (1 large, 1 medium, 1 small). No smoking.
