Tides Reach Cottage
Isle Ornsay Bay, Isle of Skye
Tides Reach on Skye, is on Isle Ornsay Bay - 15 minutes drive south of the Skye Bridge and 15 minutes north of the car-ferry at Armadale. It is approximately 140 yards off the Camas Croise coast road.
The cottage is reached by a short steep private driveway leading to a parking space for two cars from which there is an easy footpath leading 100 yards to the cottage. Its superb position sitting alone just a few feet above the water's edge on the rocky shore of the bay affords a seclusion and sense of adventure.
There are panoramic views across to Isle Ornsay village and The Sound of Sleat from the cottage's pretty garden (with furniture) and the long comfortable conservatory/sitting-room, with a chance to see the oyster-catchers and herons which visit the bay frequently.
The inability to take your car right to the door means that luggage has to be carried along the path, so it is not a suitable house for the infirm or very elderly. Deer, seals and the reclusive otter have often been seen from the cottage's conservatory.
The cottage is within walking distance of the friendly Eilean Iarmain Hotel (well-known for its restaurant/bar meals and the ceilidh it often holds on Thursday nights).
This whole Sleat area, known as 'The Garden of Skye', offers magnificent excursions by foot, car or bike, as well as boat trips from Armadale to the smaller islands and the ferry to The Road to the Isles. The nearest largish town is Broadford (9 miles), which has a selection of shops, restaurants and hotels.
On Sleat, it is worth taking the little road across the peninsula (look out for stags) to Ord, where there are a host of lovely picnic spots with fabulous views of the Cuillins and the probability of seeing seals in the water or basking on the shore. Just to the south towards Armadale is the Gaelic College, which hosts many lively events and ceilidhs, to which visitors are welcome. Just outside Armadale itself is the Clan Donald Centre with ruined Armadale Castle and its lovely gardens.
To the north, just before Broadford, another little road turns off to the right down to the Kylerhea ferry to Glenelg. On the descent there are spectacular views of the Sound of Sleat and the mountains on the mainland. Making the crossing (in summer only) and returning by the Bridge makes a great day out. At Kylerhea there is also an otter hide above the shore.
Skye is blessed with excellent road connections and it is possible to visit all parts of the island from Tides Reach. Dunvegan Castle and the Coral Beaches should certainly be on every to-do list, as should be the capital, Portree, with its attractive harbour. Beyond that are The Old Man of Storr and the other fantastical rock formations of the Quiraing. Elgol and Glenbrittle are also well worth considering, as is a visit to Raasay, or a round of golf at Sconser. It goes without saying that the Cuillins provide some of the best walking and climbing in Britain.
