Sleat, Isle of Skye
This excellent detached bungalow is situated on the Sleat Peninsula in the south of Skye, that part of the island which is often called 'The Garden of Skye'.
It stands in its own large garden where there is a swing and a couple of small ponds (care with young children). It has a lovely open aspect to the south east with views across the Sound of Sleat to Beinn Sgritheal on the mainland, after which the cottage is named.
Inside, the house is bright and spacious with very stylish décor and a feature of interest in just about every room. The sitting room is double height, with high rafters and it is decorated in bold, bright colours with a striking chimney breast surrounding the welcoming open fire.
The dining kitchen is also bright and cheerful with a dining area that is separated from the kitchen section by a bank of units. The kitchen is very well equipped and has a dishwasher that takes away the chore of doing the dishes. There are also French doors out to the garden, so with them open you can ‘bring the outdoors indoors’.
All on one level there are four bedrooms, two doubles and two singles, that are all very comfortable and well-furnished. The décor in the bedrooms is bright and attractive, with interesting wall decorations that give them additional charm. One of the double rooms has a king-size bed and the make-up of the rooms makes the accommodation very versatile. The family bathroom with bath and shower over completes the accommodation.
Outside the cottage has ample off road parking and there is a sheltered and secluded shingle and sand beach just a short stroll away.
It is no wonder that Skye is arguably the most popular Scottish island for holidays. Climbers come to tackle the spectacular Cuillins, of which you have an amazing view just over the back of the peninsula near Ord (where there are also great picnic sites on the machair).
There are plenty of walking opportunities too for the less energetic, as well as all the wonderful offshore and onshore wildlife to enjoy. From Ardvasar, you can take Seafari trips and whilst there you can also visit the Clan Donald Centre and gardens at Armadale Castle. This is also a popular area for game and sea fishing.
If you don't wish to eat in every night, you are spoiled for choice in this part of Skye, with the Eilean Iarmain Hotel a short drive along the road and Lady Claire Macdonald's Kinloch House a few miles away towards Broadford. The Ardvasar Hotel to the south also serves good meals. The cottage is also within walking distance of the Gaelic College, which hosts lots of Gaelic cultural events.
To the north is Broadford (13 miles), which has a supermarket, shops, petrol, banks, etc. It is also worth taking the little single track road down to the Glenelg ferry (runs from April to October) at Kylerhea. Whether you take the ferry or not, it is a spectacular road and you can visit the otter hide at Kylerhea at the same time.
To the north, all the breathtaking scenery of Skye awaits you, including Portree, Dunvegan, the Coral Beaches, the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing. The list is endless and you will doubtless be back for another stay in this snug and most comfortable cottage.
