The Gables is a charming little cottage, part of some traditional farm steading buildings just off the breathtakingly beautiful back road from Tarbert (11m) to Lochgilphead (20m) - single track with passing places - on the west coast of the Mull of Kintyre. It has a secluded garden area with patio.
Within its thick stone walls it has been carefully restored with 'upside-down' accommodation - a double bedroom with king size bed and en suite shower room downstairs, and upstairs, an open plan living area, cosy and double glazed, with cast iron log-effect stove.
There is a secluded sandy beach within a short walk of the Gables and some excellent walking round about. This coast affords stunning views of Islay, Jura and Gigha and you will also get used to seeing the seals basking on the rocks beside the road. Birdwatchers too will find plenty to interest them. Golf is available at Lochgilphead and at Tarbert, where the owners also have their own riding centre.
If gardens are your bag, then you will be spoiled for choice. Take a day trip across to the Achamore Gardens on Gigha or Jura House on Jura. Further up the coast, there are the National Trust Gardens at Crarae and the Arduaine Gardens. They all enjoy an international reputation.
A further excursion might be to the lovely island of Arran - you can sail from Tarbert or Claonaig (22m).
History or archaeology buffs will be fascinated by Kilmartin Glen, with Bronze Age cairns and stone circles which are over 3,000 years old. A visit to Inveraray Castle, the seat of Clan Campbell, is also very worthwhile. While there, take in Inveraray Jail.
Kilberry has an award-winning inn which serves very good meals (closed Jan-Feb), while Tarbert is your nearest base for shopping. Try the seafood for which the region is famous in one of its excellent restaurants.
The first £10 of heating by electric panel heaters, bed linen and towels are INCLUDED in the rental.
Sorry, no pets.
