Pier Cottage is idyllically situated just yards from the shore near picturesque Carsaig on the southernmost side of the Ross of Mull, with glorious views across the sea to the misty isles of Scarba, Jura, Islay and Colonsay.  While the immediate shore is rocky, there is an extensive sandy beach just quarter of a mile away at Carsaig Bay.

This traditional whitewashed stone cottage is conveniently arranged on one level.  Having been in the McLean family for over 45 years, it has a homely, lived-in feel. It has a newly fitted kitchen and offers versatile sleeping accommodation.  There is one double bedroom and one small twin.  The large living room has an open fire  and there is also a large sun-porch with a luxuriant vine.   Children will revel in the freedom of the surroundings: there is a lawn in front of the cottage leading down to the rocks and the sea, a wooded area and wild garden.

The cottage is reached by a private road from Carsaig Pier and is under an hour from the ferry terminal at Craignure.  About the same time away in the other direction is lovely Iona, and in summer there are boat trips from Bunessan (ca.15 miles) and Fionnphort to Fingal's Cave on Staffa, and the Treshnish Isles.

This beautiful area is ideal for walking, fishing, painting and spending long lazy days on the beach.  Those in search of history will find fascinating castles to visit at Torosay (take a ride on the miniature railway and walk around the lovely gardens) and Duart.  It is worth making the 50 mile journey to Tobermory, Mull's only town, with its famous coloured houses clustered round the harbour. You might combine that trip with a memorable visit to the Mull Little Theatre at Dervaig.

There is a Post Office/Shop, Pub and hotel at Pennygael (6.5m).

Heating is by electric convector and halogen heaters, wood burning stoves and open fire.  Bed linen and towels may be hired but are available for overseas guests only.     Pets are welcome.  Payphone.   No smoking in the cottage.  Water is from a private source.  You may therefore prefer to bring bottled water for drinking.  Wi-Fi is available, subject to provider.

A captivating and enchanting house in which our time here passes in the blink of an eye.

Ferguson party, Shropshire 11/04/2010

Glorious weather all week. Sunburn to prove it! Spring has really sprung. The vine has turned from being all brown and wrinkly to having fresh lime green leaves. Primroses adorn the slopes and there is a patch on the path near the Library of a mixture of primroses, violets and sorrel.

Freese party, Suffolk 18/04/2010

We now can't remember how many times we have returned.....we began coming 19 years ago! Within our first 24 hours we have seen stags, goats, seals, otters, dolphins/porpoises, diving gannets, from the comfort of the porch!

Clayton Jones party, Lincolnshire 02/05/2010

Glorious day - walked coastal path towards Lochbuie. Profusion of otters and orchids, blossom and butterflies....what a glorious day for doing nothing! Otters - 2 pups and mother fished between the reefs for 30 minutes. Magical....

Trevethick party, Lincolnshire 09/05/2010

This is our 9th or 10th visit in 27 years. Although there have been some upgrades since our last visit, the essence and the character of the cottage remain. As I write, a willow warbler is gathering nesting material from amongst rosebriars.

Parr party, Hampshire 06/06/2010

Highlights this week have been seeing a sea eagle - also a snow bunting (on the rocks on the Loch Buie path), the otters, the garden birds, the sunshine, but mostly just the Pier Cottage....magic!

Wainwright party, Edinburgh 13/06/2010

Highlight - spent an afternoon watching a basking shark in the bay in front of the cottage. Must have been about 22 feet - swam back and forth feeding all afternon. In 25 years of visiting, this is a first for us. PS New bathroom terrific as is the new flooring in the porch.

Shardlow party, Derbyshire 07/11/2010
