-> CairngormsThe Cairngorm Mountains and valleys provide a stunning landscape in the central Highlands, accessed via the A9 from Perth. The Cairngorms National Park was established in 2004 to protect the beauty of the area together with its varied wildlife and flora. The mountains rise to over 1100 metres providing magnificent views and excellent opportunities for skiing, climbing and walking. The woodland habitat in the valleys and heather-clad foothills are ideal for rare species such as the pine marten, wildcat, red squirrel, osprey, capercaillie, red and black grouse, and crossbill. The higher slopes offer an opportunity to view golden eagles, peregrine falcons, ptarmigan, snow bunting, dotterel and reindeer.
Although Aviemore is famous as a ski centre, visitors can enjoy a range of watersports on Loch Morlich and Loch Insh during the warmer weather, and salmon fishing in the Spey and its tributaries. The villages and small towns along the A9 which follows the Spey valley, offer a range of accommodation and activities for visitors. |
