Dunkeld & Blairgowrie

DUNKELD & BLAIRGOWRIE

Dunkeld
Dunkeld lies in a stunning landscape of woodlands and hills, 12 miles north of Perth on the A9.  The 14th century Dunkeld Cathedral lies within a beautiful wooded parkland - half of the cathedral was damaged during the Reformation and the 1689 Battle of Dunkeld and is in ruins, but half is still used as a church.  Nearby is Birnam (site of the Birnam Wood in Shakespeare's play Macbeth - one old oak remains) where the Beatrix Potter Park provides information on the life of the author of the Peter Rabbit children's stories who spent childhood holidays in the village.  This area is a popular base for walkers.

There is a tourist office in Dunkeld.  Hotels in the area include the Royal Dunkeld, Birnam House Hotel and the Taybank Hotel - all of which provide good evening meals.  There is a train station by Birnam connecting Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness and buses from these cities stop at the station.  There are also local buses linking Dunkeld with Blairgowrie and Aberfeldy.

Blairgowrie
Blairgowrie lies 11 miles east of Dunkeld on the A923 or can be accessed directly from Perth by taking the A93.  The village is set in stunning scenery with views of the mountains further north at the Glenshee ski resort.  Blairgowrie is a good centre for walks, such as the short walk to the 1862 steam turbine and water wheel at the Keathbank Jute Mill and the 5-day 60-mile Cateran Trail. The tourist office is in Wellmeadow and buses run to Blairgowrie from Perth and Dundee.  Hotels include the Angus Hotel and, further north, the Spittal of Glenshee Hotel, both of which serve good food.

The village of Alyth, 5 miles east of Blairgowrie off the A926, is most attractive having old bridges spanning the canal.  Worth visiting is the 60-foot waterfall of Reekie Linn which lies north of Alyth of the B954.  South of Alyth on the B954 is the village of Meigle which has many interesting 7-10th century early Christian and Pictish carved stones displayed in the museum.
