The 40-mile area west of Perth to Loch Earn is known as Strathearn - an attractive area of rich farmland, hills and lochs. Auchterarder is known best for the world-famous Gleneagles Hotel and golf course. The 12th century St. Serf's Church in nearby Dunning (capital of the Picts) houses the Dupplin Cross, an elaborately carved Pictish stone.
Crieff, about 12 miles north of Auchterarder, developed as a Victorian spa town and attracts visitors for its atmosphere, interesting shops and visitor centre. Crieff Hydro is a large hotel with leisure centre and golf course within its extensive grounds. The Famous Grouse Experience at Glenturret Distillery, the oldest distillery in Scotland, includes a multimedia presentation and an interactive display for children. Four miles south-east of Crieff on the B8062 is the Innerpeffray Library founded in 1680, the oldest in Scotland, whose collection includes many rare and ancient books. Drummond Castle Gardens, 2 miles south of Crieff on the A822, were formed in 1630 reflecting both French and Italian garden design. To the west of Crieff on the A85 is the quaint conservation village of Comrie and the Drummond Trout Farm & Fishery.
Loch Earn is a popular venue for watersports enthusiasts and power-boats, jet skis and waterskis can be hired at Lochearnhead.
