The Old Mill at Drumelzier

Few houses have a situation more secluded and charming than this. Reached by a short drive from the tiny hamlet of Drumelzier which is south west of Peebles in the lovely Scottish Borders, The Old Mill has a fairytale setting by the tumbling Powsail Burn.

With the green Border hills all around, it faces out across its little valley to the pine woods which are home to many birds and animals. From its dedicated parking area guests cross a small footbridge and arrive into its enclosed garden and the front door. A fairytale ‘cottage in the wood’ indeed!
The house has long been a much-loved retreat for the owner’s family and much care has gone into its renovation and refurbishment, while its essential character has been equally carefully maintained. The sitting room is spacious yet cosy, with a large bay window, a welcoming open fire in its original Victorian surround and a warm and inviting ambience.
The dining room is scarcely less attractive, again with an open fire (and all this in addition to modern oil-fired central heating) and joined by an archway to the very modern and efficient kitchen, which is well equipped with all necessary appliances. Also on this level is shower room with WC.
Upstairs there are three bedrooms, a double, a twin and a single room with two additional bunk beds. The bedrooms confer maximum versatility on the lodgings and are all pleasingly and comfortably furnished. A further bathroom completes the accommodation.
The village of Broughton (3 miles) has a shop, garage and tearoom/bistro, Biggar (8 miles) and Peebles (10 miles) also have a great selection of hotels, shops, cafes, museums, etc. It is just under an hour's drive to all the capital attractions of Edinburgh, with Glasgow being a bit further afield.
The whole surrounding countryside is a mine of historical interest. From prehistoric remains to castles and wizards in the 6th century, blood-feuds and dastardly deeds in the 13th to17th centuries, John Buchan of '39 Steps' fame, William Ewart Gladstone in the 19th century to General Sikorski's Free Polish Army in World War 2, there are endless interests to pursue.
The Powsail Burn joins the River Tweed, one of Scotland’s foremost salmon rivers (fishing available by permit) just downstream from Drumelzier, at the point where legend places the wizard Merlin's grave (a plaque marks the spot).
Peebles has a golf course, leisure centre and riding at the Hydro Hotel, while just a little further to the east are the superb mountain biking trails at Glentress and Innerleithen. Here too, is Traquair House, reputedly the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland, where it is said that the bear gates will ‘remain closed until a Stuart king sits once more on the throne of Britain’. It plays host to many pageants, fairs, and other events throughout the year and even has its own micro brewery.
The Border hills are perfect for walking and it is possible to stride out straight from the cottage. Day trips from The Old Mill could include the drive from Tweedsmuir by way of the Talla and Megget Reservoirs to St Mary’s Loch (great for sailing, windsurfing and picnics). Or to the south west, a visit to Wanlockhead, once a centre of lead mining and now an enchanting little village high in the hills, where sheep trip along the lanes and there is a fascinating museum of its past history.
