The view as you cross the Border over Carter Bar is truly splendid.  Indeed it seems as if all Scotland lies spread before you.  Just 7 miles north from that crossing point, if you turn west- (take care, the single track road is so scenic that you could well be distracted from the business in hand!) - you will come to Broomhills Cottage.

On a working farm (so there will be occasional farm traffic) this excellent, detached farm cottage faces south and stands above some steadings and  the only other two nearby dwellings, so you can see right away back to the Border.  There is parking at the door, a large grass garden (furniture, barbecue) to the side and rear and secure storage for bikes etc.

Inside, the owners have refurbished it to a very high standard, with, downstairs, a cosy sitting room with wood burner, a well equipped kitchen diner and a bathroom.  Up the rather steep stairs are two good bedrooms with coombed ceilings.

It is a rare treat to find such a peaceful and spectacular situation and still be within easy reach of so many attractions.  Perhaps nearest is the Jedburgh Deer and Farm Park at Mervinslaw (3m).  At the cottage, you are about equidistant from Hawick and Jedburgh.  Both have a wide range of shops, cashmere and woollen outlets, and leisure centres.  Nearer at hand, there is a pub at Bonchester Bridge (4m).

For walking, you can choose between the Cheviots to the south, or the Border hills to the north and west.  In Jedburgh, you can visit the ruined abbey, the Jail (haunted!) and Mary Queen of Scots House, while a further 10 miles or so up the A68 is the pretty town of Melrose.  Heading further north, you can be in Edinburgh in about an hour.  Or you can head east to the Berwickshire and Northumbrian coasts, to visit Berwick itself, Lindisfarne, Alnwick Castle, or spend a day on the beautiful beaches there.

Also in Northumberland, the Kielder Forest Park (25m) offers a large variety of leisure experiences, walking, cycling, kayaking, riding, sailing and all manner of  water sports and sailing.  However, if you wish to ride closer to home (this is classic riding country), a field is available next to the cottage so you can bring your own horse.  The owners can also provide information on shooting and local fishing.  Minto, about 5 miles away, has an excellent golf course.

Heating is by electricity (£15 INCLUDED) and two wood burning stoves (Logs included).  Bed linen, and towels are INCLUDED.  Pets are welcome by arrangement.  Smoking is not permitted in the cottage.  Wi-Fi is available, subject to provider.
