Crailing Cottage stands amid the parklands of historic Crailing House, between Jedburgh (4m) and Kelso (8m) in the lovely Scottish Borders. With no other houses round about, it backs on to the old stable yard, the buildings of which are now used only for storage (plenty parking in the yard). To the front, there are French doors from the sitting room to a delightfully secluded and enclosed garden.
Reached by a private road from the tiny village of Crailing (blink and you'll miss it) the cottage has been refurbished by the new owners of the Estate to the highest standards and is bright, fresh and extremely comfortable. On the ground floor there is a most inviting sitting room with wood burner, a very well fitted and equipped kitchen-diner and a shower room. Upstairs there are three excellent bedrooms, a double, twin and single and a further bathroom.
Those who come looking for a place to relax in peace and tranquillity will find that Crailing Cottage is ideal for doing just that, while strolls through the Estate and along the river offer the possibility of gentle exercise right on the doorstep.
But it would be a pity to come here and not make the most of the many attractions of the surrounding area. Kelso and Jedburgh are both historic and attractive towns, with Floors Castle (Kelso), Mary Queen of Scots House (Jedburgh), and both with ruined abbeys, interesting shops and eating places. Nearer to hand is the Caddyman Restaurant at the Mounthooly golf driving range which offers excellent lunches and evening meals at weekends. The Teviotdale Smokery is also worth a visit, while the superb Roxburghe Hotel offers not only a spa and fine dining but also a Championship golf course.
The Tweed and the Teviot are close by for fishermen. The Berwickshire coast, with the beach at Coldingham and the spectacular cliffs and bird colonies at St Abbs, are within an hour's drive. In the other direction is the pretty town of Melrose, nestling under the Eildon Hills, and beyond that the walking opportunities afforded by the green Border hills, mountain biking at Glentress and Innerleithen, riding, golfing, canoeing - the list is endless.
For a spot of urban bustle, Edinburgh is just over 40 miles away, with regular buses from Jedburgh, Kelso and Melrose should you wish to leave the car at home (always a good idea with Edinburgh!)
However, you choose to spend your days, it will always be a joy to return to the welcoming atmosphere of Crailing Cottage.
Bed linen, towels, electricity and the first £20 of oil-CH are INCLUDED in the rental. Sorry, pets are not accepted. No smoking in the cottage. Wi-Fi is available, subject to provider.
