All country enthusiasts will discover the perfect retreat at Mabonlaw Cottage, tucked away down a farm track, 800 feet high among the rolling Scottish Borders hills, hidden away from all except the skylarks and house martins which build their nests. Complete privacy, yet just under 6 miles from the bustling town of Hawick.
Mabonlaw is the perfect place to rest amid the peaceful countryside and offers a stupendous view stretching southwest (without a house in sight) to the distant hills which border England, the perfect spot from which to spy the English raiders, and next to the site of an Iron Age fort.
Mabonlaw Cottage, along with Easter Harden Cottage is located on the historic Harden Estate and benefits from the same high standards and attention to detail. Mabonlaw was originally occupied by the estate shepherd and has been thoughtfully renovated into a pleasant country-style retreat prioritising warmth and comfort. Some of the most striking features of Mabonlaw are the bright and spacious rooms that open the home up to the beautiful landscapes beyond.
The dining kitchen is a brilliant communal space where guests can gather for morning fry-ups and evening meals. Carefully laid out, with the modern fitted kitchen area to the back and the dining area near the window, means you’ll never miss the ever-changing skies or frequent wildlife visitors. There's comfortable seating available in the kitchen for staying cosy beside the additional wood-burning stove. The sitting room has an open fire at the heart of the room and a piano for evening entertainment. Also on the ground floor is a handy utility space combined with a shower room, WC and Belfast sink.
Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, all charmingly furnished: a double, a twin and a single, which all have stripped pine floors and ample space.
In the double and twin room, the original decorative fireplaces have been retained, adding character. The smaller single bedroom is rendered by light through the Velux window. A family bathroom completes the accommodation.
Private parking is available outside the cottage. Mabonlaw is surrounded by fields, as well as a pretty, enclosed garden with outdoor furniture available for spending hours outdoors appreciating the vistas or resting with your morning cuppa. The garden is also the perfect space where children and pets can run wild in safety, while in the barn, guests will find table tennis, darts and a resident owl! If you’re lucky, eggs from the estate hens will be available at the main house.
All the rich Border countryside is on your doorstep here and excellent fishing can be arranged on the Estate.
Golf courses of all levels are within easy reach, as are local restaurants and the knitwear and cashmere outlets for which Hawick is famous.
This is wonderful riding and walking country, starting straight from the door. Cycling enthusiasts will find the trails in nearby Craik Forest very much to their liking, or they can try those at Glentress (30 miles) and Innerleithen near Peebles.
A lovely drive through the quiet hills to St Mary’s Loch is to be recommended, where there are sailing and windsurfing possibilities. It is also a great place for a lochside picnic, with streams to be paddled in or gentle walks along the shore.
There is a bewildering choice of castles, stately homes and gardens to visit in this historic area - forbidding Hermitage Castle near Newcastleton, Sir Walter Scott’s home at Abbotsford, Traquair House near Peebles or the four Border abbeys at Melrose, Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh. Garden lovers can choose between Kailzie Gardens, Dawyck Gardens or Priorwood Gardens in Melrose.
This is an area that is very well supplied with attractions to suit all tastes, and it is only an hour and a half's drive, or 50 minutes by train from Galashiels (17.5 miles), from the bustling capital of Edinburgh. For those wishing to range further afield the Solway coast, the Lake District and Northumbria are all within easy visiting distance.
