Fern Cottage is a stone-built cottage in traditional Scottish style which stands in its own garden on the outskirts of the village of Braemar (with shops, pubs, restaurants and hotels) in Royal Deeside.

Overview

With all the cosy charm of a period cottage, including many of its original features, it is also large enough to accommodate a family in considerable comfort.

This is a cottage which, as you walk in, seems to enfold you in a warm and welcoming embrace. It has the atmosphere of a loved and lived-in family home and is a great place to enjoy with children and/or assorted family members. The sitting room is bright and comfortably furnished and, with its open fire, is the perfect place for everyone to congregate. It has been opened to the dining area, which again creates a light and spacious feel and beyond that is the well-equipped kitchen.

One of the most noticeable features of the cottage is the amount of natural wood – stripped wood flooring, stained pine doors and skirting boards, pine kitchen and the fine fireplace in the sitting room. It all contributes to a very traditional feel which is just as it should be when you remember that you are in the heart of the Highlands so beloved of Queen Victoria and many of her descendants.

Upstairs are three charming bedrooms, a double, a twin and a single room with additional pull-out child’s bed. The bathroom has a bath with shower over and a separate WC.

The rear garden backs right on to the hillside, where deer often graze, while the nearby duck pond with its ever-hungry tenants is a constant source of delight for children.

As the cottage is right at the end of the road, where it joins the track on to Morrone Hill, there is almost no traffic except the odd visitor coming up to the duck pond. The grassy garden is ideal for children and pets to play and with the hill immediately alongside, you can set off of a day’s walk without even getting into the car.

Map & Local

In the area, there is lots for all members of the family to enjoy. This is some of the best walking terrain in the country in truly stunning scenery, with a choice of forest and riverside trails as well as more demanding hill walking and climbing.

The energetic can tackle nearby Lochnagar, or brave the haunted Lairig Ghru, which is seriously spooky in even the brightest weather. Skiing (14 miles at Glenshee and 23 miles at the Lecht where there is also a dry ski slope), golf, riding and fishing are all available locally.

To the north visitors can take the famous Cockbridge to Tomintoul road, the highest in Britain, towards Inverness (70 miles with all facilities). This conveniently crosses the Malt Whisky Trail, so you may not get much further if you stop to sample the wares at some of the famous distilleries in the area!

To the east, follow the beautiful valley of the Dee to Aberdeen (60 miles), which is also well worth a visit and where there are also fine beaches to enjoy. The area is dotted with stately homes and castles - not least the Queen's Highland retreat at Balmoral (9 miles) - which are open to the public, so there is plenty to do in all weathers. To the south, the 'Fair City' of Perth (swimming complex with flumes, ice rink and all facilities) can be reached in about an hour.
