Just a couple of minutes’ walk from the harbour, this traditional pan-tiled cottage was home to the local fisherman and their families back in the 1800s. You are welcomed by an impressive stained glass front door that features one of the mythological ‘Selkies’ from which the cottage takes its name and there is colourful artwork dotted around the rest of the house.
The light and airy living area is open plan with a modern wood-burning stove set into the wall and stylish seating around it, making the ideal place to spend relaxed evenings in. The well-equipped modern kitchen area has plenty of space for cooking and there is a dining area right alongside so that the cook doesn’t have to miss out on all the fun.
The feature wooden staircase at the heart of the living area leads up to the two bedrooms. The master double room is spacious and bright with plenty of storage and a lovely view out across the courtyard to the sea. The smaller double room, which is really only suitable for one person, also has a pretty sea view and there is a sunny shower room that completes the indoor accommodation.
Outside is a charming courtyard that gets the sun all day, with seating areas from which you can sit and admire the sun rise over an early breakfast, or enjoy a drink in the evening. The outhouses opposite the cottage were originally used by the fisherman to store and dry their nets, but these now house an art studio. There are steps from the courtyard that meander right down to the pretty harbour, where there is a little stretch of sandy beach. Parking is available either at the harbour or on the road above the toft.
There is a local shop and a bakery in walking distance of the cottage and the pub in the harbour serves delicious meals that feature lots of incredibly fresh seafood.
Watersports are also available from the harbour with canoeing and coastal scrambles along chain walks, as well as abseiling, archery and mountain biking back on dry land. There are lovely coastal walks on the Fife Coastal path from the village leading to Crail in one direction and Elie in the other direction, where there is a lovely sandy beach that is ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
The fishing village of Anstruther (0.5 miles) is in walking distance and is where you will find the nearest supermarket. The village centres around its pretty harbour where you will an award-winning fish and chip shop and the Scottish Fisheries Museum that provides an interesting insight into the country's nautical past.
Boat trips are available from the harbour going across to the little national nature reserve, the Isle of May, which is open to visitors in the summer. The island is renowned for its many sea bird colonies, where hundreds of thousands of birds nest, including puffins, razorbills and guillemots. There are also seals and the occasional whale to be seen off shore and there are three lighthouses to visit, including Scotland’s oldest one - the Beacon.
This area is golf country and there are plenty of local courses, including the links courses on the coast. The course at Kingsbarns is particularly picturesque with its sea views from virtually the whole course and lovely beach walks.
The University town of St Andrews (10 miles) attracts visitors from all over the world, particularly when it hosts the British Open Golf Championship every four years. The town has a wide range of shops, pubs and restaurants as well as castle ruins and an impressive cathedral to explore. Craigtoun Country Park just outside St Andrews has a range of outdoor activities, including an adventure playground, a bouncy castle, crazy golf and even a miniature railway.
