The apartment has a warmth and charm that is surprising given its convenient central location. In the cosy sitting/dining room is an eclectic mix of comfortable furniture and a feature wall that showcases a fine 1737 map of Perthshire and illustrations of some of the grand houses that would have been around at the time.
There really is something new to discover every day, with lots of maps and books on Scotland that are sure to entertain for hours. The apartment’s owner is an author and there are interesting 19th century family photos on the walls, along with some of her book jacket covers.
All on one level there is a colourful bedroom that is spacious and light and a modern bathroom with walk-in shower.
Just at the end of the road the impressive cathedral is open to the public to walk around the beautiful grounds or head inside (free entry) to admire the wonderful stained glass windows and see the tomb of Alexander Stewart, the notorious Wolf of Badenoch.
From the gates of the cathedral the Dunkeld Heritage Trail leads through the town and out to Stanley hill with distinctive blue signs that point out particular buildings of historical interest along the way.
It is just a minutes’ stroll through the wynd to the River Tay for a wander along the banks or simply to sit and admire the view. The café just a couple of doors along serves excellent cakes and there is also a pottery painting studio to try a little further on.
The Atholl Arms offers bar meals using fine local produce and if the weather is good there are tables outside by the river for al fresco dining with views out over the water to Thomas Telford’s famous Dunkeld Bridge.
At The Hermitage just outside Dunkeld there are lovely woodland walks amongst the towering Douglas fir trees leading to Ossian’s Hall which is a great viewpoint for the Black Linn waterfalls.
Pitlochry (13 miles) is known for its hydroelectric dam and fish ladder where the salmon are given a helping hand in negotiating the dam. Viewing chambers have been set up along their route and the best time to see them is generally from April through to August. Those of a green fingered persuasion will love Pitlochry’s Explorers Garden that tells the fascinating history of Plant Hunters on their travels around the world.
Highland Safaris (20 miles) near Aberfeldy has a red deer centre and gold panning centre where you can search for some treasures. It also offers wildlife spotting land rover safaris and even the chance to try 4x4 off road driving for yourself.
