Fortingall, just northwest of Aberfeldy in beautiful Highland Perthshire, is one of the prettiest (think roses round the door thatched cottages) and most historic villages in Scotland.

Tucked away on the little single track road to Glen Lyon (Scotland's longest glen), it is a haven of peace and tranquillity which yet boasts a very fine hotel offering excellent meals. In the corner of an elegant courtyard setting, between the hotel and the wooded hillside right behind is Fortingall Stables, a superb and quite spectacular conversion of an old stables complex.
As soon as you walk through the arch to the recessed front door, you know you are in for something special, as the interior of this spacious and exquisitely appointed house has wall-to-wall wow factor! It almost goes without saying that the owner is an interior designer - the furnishings throughout the house are of the highest quality and tremendous elegance.
The broad, welcoming hallway greets you on entry and leads you in to the vast, open plan galleried living area. The cosy seating area offers a clear invitation for cosy, convivial evenings beside the wood burning stove. There is a door out to the secluded rear garden (with furniture) that beckons you outside on a sunny morning, where you can walk out right on to the hill.
Downstairs, there are two double bedrooms one with doors out to the garden and a luxury porcelanosa shower room with underfloor heating and enhanced lighting. There is also another separate bathroom.
Upstairs there is a very large twin bedroom off the broad landing that has been beautifully presented.
Outside there is a large grassed garden to the rear and a paved patio area (with furniture). Standing in the garden, looking across the valley, all you will probably hear is birdsong and perhaps a busy woodpecker hard at work in a nearby tree.
The famous Fortingall Yew is only a few yards away in the neighbouring churchyard. This historic veteran, at around 4,000 years old, is said to be the oldest living thing in Europe.
Fortingall is also reputedly the birthplace of Pontius Pilate (one of the many, it must be said) who was said to be the offspring of his Roman legionnaire father and a local girl.
Nearby Aberfeldy is the closest place for supermarket shopping and offers a host of other attractions including a distillery. The Fortingall Hotel is within yards of the front door but there are plenty of other places to eat, including The Watermill - a very fine cafe/gallery/bookshop, leisure centre and even a small cinema. The Birks of Aberfeldy on the edge of town also offers delightful riverside walks if you don’t feel up to tackling Schiehallion or Ben Lawers which dominates Loch Tay.
Loch Tay offers various water sports, whereas Glen Lyon offers great walking and cycling, or by taking the road over to Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch (with water sports) you can climb Schiehallion.
There is golf at Kenmore, Aberfeldy and Killin about thirty minutes from the house and by the time you get there you are well on the way to Oban and the west coast, or even Loch Lomond.
If you take the road from Tummel Bridge to Pitlochry, you will come to the breathtaking Queen’s View, the Queen in question being Victoria. Pitlochry is another bustling tourist town with its ‘Theatre in the Hills’ and the dam and fish ladder, where in season you can watch the salmon making the ascent to their breeding grounds upstream. You can make the round trip and return via Grandtully, where there is not only white water rafting but also an absolutely amazing chocolate shop!
Just north of Pitlochry is Blair Atholl, where Blair Castle is open to visitors and there is another water mill. This time it is an amazing working flour mill/bakery which made it to the regional finals of ITV’s Britain’s Best Bakery competition. While your purse is out, why not continue another couple of miles up the A9 to the tempting restaurant, food and clothing halls of the House of Bruar?
