Accessed by a single track road that follows the course of the river it has been fully refurbished to make a warm and welcoming holiday home. Inside, the entry porch leads into a spacious double height hallway that runs the length of the house. The charming sitting room is cosy and warm with a wood-burning stove at its heart and plenty of comfortable seating to relax in after days spent out exploring.
The sizeable kitchen is bright and airy and has plenty of space for cooking. There is a dining area as well, so the cook doesn’t have to miss out on all the fun. Also on this level is the large, modern family bathroom that has a double-ended bath and large walk-in shower. Upstairs there are two spacious bedrooms off the landing, a double (with king size bed) and a twin. Both bedrooms are pleasantly presented with slightly coombed ceilings and roof windows from which to admire the surrounding forest.
Outside, there is parking right at the door and a fully enclosed garden with a garage that houses the generator that provides the cottage’s power. The River Dee runs through the forest close to the back of the garden and there are plenty of walking trails and mountain biking routes to be found nearby.
Just a 5 minute walk down the road from the cottage is the bridge spanning the well-known Linn O’ Dee, a 300 metre natural gorge that has stunning waterfalls that are formed as the river rushes through the rock formations. There are some lovely riverside walks from which to take in this natural phenomenon and perhaps even stop for a picnic and try to spot the salmon leaping in the river.
On your way to the cottage you pass through the Mar Lodge Estate that is known for its abundant wildlife. It has even found fame after being featured on the BBC’s Springwatch and Autumnwatch TV programmes.
Braemar (6 miles) is a picturesque village that has an array of interesting little independent gift shops, as well as a supermarket, PO, pub, restaurant and golf course. Braemar Highland Safaris run tours from the village where an experienced guide takes you out and shows you the stunning scenery in air conditioned comfort and you can try to spot the local red deer, grouse, ptarmigan and eagles! A mile outside of the village is Braemar Castle which is owned by the Farquharson clan and is open to the public in the summer months.
Balmoral Castle (15 miles) is also open to the public in the summer and you can explore the grounds, take in the royal exhibition and visit the coffee shop and gift shop. The Royal Family usually returns to the village each September for the Braemar Gathering, a long-standing event with traditional pipe music, dancing and Highland games such as tug of war and tossing the caber.
As the cottage is within the Cairngorms National Park there is plenty to explore right on the doorstep and in particular the Cairngorm mountains which are particularly popular with walkers and climbers. There is also easy access to skiing nearby at the Glenshee ski centre (15 miles) where you can try your hand at skiing and snowboarding with lessons and equipment hire available.
