More than Just a Ski Resort
Aviemore is a convenient base for fishing, walking, climbing, pony trekking and mountain biking. You can also try quad-biking, paintballing and other pursuits at the Alvie & Dalraddy Estate 3 miles south of Aviemore and enjoy a trip on the Strathspey Steam Railway which operates trains from Aviemore through Boat of Garten to Broomhill.
The Rothiemurchus Estate welcomes visitors and offers land, water and air based activities to numerous to mention here! There is a watersports centre at Loch Morlich where you can take lessons in the various watersports they offer and at Glenmore Lodge, Scotland's national outdoor training centre, you can develop your skills or qualify in an adventure sport of your choice.
There is another watersports and outdoor activity centre with a dry ski slope at Loch Insh, Kincraig and the Landmark Forest Heritage Park in Carrbridge provides an interesting day out for the family with its Treetop Trail through the forest canopy, nature trails, steam-powered sawmill, maze and other attractions.
You can discover Scottish wildlife and endangered animals of the world at the Highland Wildlife Park by driving through the main safari park or walking around the enclosures or visit the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre to feed the tame reindeer. The Cairngorm Sleddog Centre also has a wide range of activites to offer including sleddog trips and safaris. You can also get close up views of ospreys in Spring and Summer at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Loch Garten Osprey Reserve, Boat of Garten, thanks to their non-invasive CCTV cameras.
The area is very popular with walkers and walks worth noting are the nature trail around the picturesque Loch an Eilan, where there are ruins of a castle on a small island, on the Rothiemurchus Estate, the 25-mile hike through the Lairig Ghru which leads to Braemar (which takes about 10 hours) and the three-hour walk to the 809-metre Meall a' Bhuachallie that starts at the Glenmore Forest Park Visitor Centre. Grantown-on-Spey, about 15 miles north-east of Aviemore, is popular with anglers.
