On the picturesque Glenmoriston Estate in Inverness-shire is Kirkfield House, a charming detached house set in a large garden in easy walking distance of the amenities of Invermoriston and less than a mile from the iconic Loch Ness.

The house’s L-shaped open plan living area is incredibly spacious and cleverly combines relaxing, cooking and dining with distinct areas for each. Evenings can be spent toasting oneself in front of the wood-burning stove whilst dinner is being prepared and then everyone can come together to eat and plan which of the many nearby activities to do first.
Large picture windows flood the room with light and a sliding door leads out to the extensive garden. The smart kitchen area is supplemented by a utility room that houses the washing machine and microwave.
All of the light and bright bedrooms have been laid out on one level off the central hallway. There are three double bedrooms (all en suite) and a pretty twin room with lovely woodland views that makes use of a family bathroom. The master double bedroom has the added luxury of a walk-in dressing room and French doors that showcase the hillside view and can be opened up to ‘let the outdoors in’.
A lovely grassed garden lies to the front of the cottage with views out across the field beyond and plenty to explore all round about.
In easy walking distance in the village of Invermoriston is a general store/PO and The Glenmoriston Arms Hotel (closed mid-December to mid-February) that has a lovely a la carte dining menu to sample.
The River Moriston runs right by the village just a short walk away for fishing and it then flows into Loch Ness, dropping down the beautiful Invermoriston Falls along the way. A nice walk leads out to the falls that are particularly impressive after heavy rainfall and ospreys and even eagles can often be spotted there. Fishing is available on the river by arrangement with the estate who have exclusive rights to a 12.5 mile long beat.
The Great Glen Way walking path that starts in Fort William and stretches all the way over to Inverness runs through Invermoriston. The route is 79 miles in total and sections of it can be walked in either direction from Invermoriston to Fort Augustus in the south or Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit to the north. Whilst in Drumnadrochit the two Nessie museums are both well worth a visit.
Fort Augustus (6 miles) has a supermarket and pretty 9 hole golf course to try out. The Caledonian Canal Centre in Fort Augustus has interesting exhibitions about the canal and also has a good café. Further down the canal make sure to stop off at Banavie to see the spectacle of Neptune’s Staircase, an impressive staircase of eight locks that the boats use to negotiate the 64 foot change in height.
Snowsports enthusiasts will enjoy a trip to The Nevis Range Resort (35 miles) and it is only an hour’s drive to Kyle of Lochalsh from which the Skye Bridge makes day trips over to the Isle of Skye easily possible.
