Set down a quiet, leafy lane in the heart of the bustling city of Inverness is The Cottage, a detached house offering the best of both worlds with a peaceful location that is yet in easy reach of the many attractions of the city.

Inside, in the sitting/dining room that is warmed by an electric flame effect stove (that supplements the gas central heating), the pretty location is evident throughout and the dining area has been set up by the window so that the view of the garden can be admired whilst dining. Seating on the patio (2 steps down) is positioned perfectly for enjoying the lush, private grassed garden and watching the birds (and occasional red squirrel) that visit the bird table. It also affords a glimpse of the golfers on the neighbouring golf course.
The kitchen is equipped with everything required and as the cottage is laid out all on the one level it is easily accessible. At the back of the house is an attractive double bedroom with a king-size bed, plenty of storage space, a handy dressing table and an en suite bathroom with a bath and shower over. There is also a useful separate WC.
To the front of the cottage is a shared courtyard with a charming statue. The area is shared by the owners who live on site, so are on hand for queries, but are also happy to leave guests to enjoy their holiday.
Inverness is known as the ‘capital of the Highlands’ and has everything you could wish for in terms of shops, pubs and restaurants. This is very much golf country and there are several different courses in easy reach to try out, as well as crazy golf if a full round doesn’t appeal.
History enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them entertained within the city which is home to landmarks such as the 19th century fortress Inverness Castle. Tours are not available but the viewing room at the top of the tower showcases a wonderful 360-degree view of the city.
The River Ness flows right through the centre of the city and a scenic walk can be had around the woodland on the Ness islands that sit out in the river and are reached by suspension bridges from the banks.
At the famous Culloden battlefield (5.5 miles) an audio guide fully explains the detail behind the significant conflict that happened there way back in 1746. The visitor centre houses some of the artefacts that were left behind and there is also a café. The nearby Clava Cairns are roughly 4,000 years old and the standing stones there have gained further fame over recent years as they were used as one of the settings for the popular Outlander TV series.
For those looking to explore a bit further afield, the Kessock Bridge links Inverness up with the picturesque Black Isle. It is only about half an hour’s drive up to Chanonry Point which is known as one of the best places in Europe for spotting dolphins.
