Fisherman’s Cottage is a charming, 200-year-old listed cottage set right by the picturesque coast in the village of Avoch, near the Cathedral town of Fortrose (5 miles) on the Black Isle.
The cottage is one of the traditional, detached stone fisherman's cottages which give the village such tremendous character. Step down into it from the quiet, winding shore road and its pretty garden.
Unusually for houses in the village, most windows face south towards the Moray Firth and from its top windows the famous pods of bottlenose dolphins can often be seen as they swim towards the inner narrows.
Inside it is lovely and cosy due to the thick traditional walls and the wood-burning stove in the sitting room adds further to the warm and inviting ambience. The dining room is just off the well-equipped kitchen so it is very handy for serving up tasty meals and there is also a shower room on this level.
Both of the bedrooms are laid out upstairs to make the most of the wonderful sea views with a spacious double bedroom and a twin room that share a light and bright bathroom.
The shingle shore is just over the wall from the enclosed garden and the little shops, pubs and eating places of this tiny working village are within easy walking distance.
Locally, by car you can easily discover Rosemarkie (3 miles), the prime dolphin-spotting site at Chanonry Point (3.5 miles), the old town of Cromarty (11.5 miles) at the head of the peninsula and all of this beautiful unspoilt area.
The Black Isle is famous for its birdlife with red kites having been reintroduced into the area and often be spotted (particularly near the Tore roundabout) and Munlochy Bay being a well-known haven for wading birds.
Children may be more interested in the long sandy beach at Rosemarkie with its community café, large play area and tennis courts. No visit to the area would be complete without a visit to the Black Isle Brewery (6 miles), while for whisky lovers there is a distillery at Muir of Ord (12.5 miles).
To the north, the wonderful beaches at the pretty town of Dornoch are within an easy drive. A visit here could perhaps be combined with a visit to Dunrobin Castle (51 miles) with its towers and turrets, which hosts frequent events and falconry displays. The Glenmorangie and Balblair Distilleries are en route and whisky connoisseurs are bound to love the Clynelish Distillery at Brora (56 miles).
Further afield, the West Coast (Torridon, Gairloch and the Ullapool area), the Moray Coast, Loch Ness and even Skye can be visited. Alternatively, you can head due north and reach John O' Groats within a couple of hours where the ferry allows for day trips to Orkney.
