The Old Fisherman's Cottage

A 200 year old listed cottage, Old Fisherman's Cottage, right on the coast in the quaint conservation village of Avoch is 10 miles north of Inverness and less than one mile south of the small Cathedral town of Fortrose (sandy beach and links golf course) on the peninsula called 'The Black Isle'.

The cottage is one of the original detached traditional stone fisherman's cottages which give the village such tremendous character. You step down into this cottage from the quiet, winding shore road and from its tiny shore garden.
Unusually for houses in the village, most windows face south towards the Moray Firth and from its top windows, you can, if you're lucky, see the famous pods of bottlenose dolphins as they swim towards the inner narrows.
Double-glazed and cosy due to the thick traditional walls, it is sympathetically furnished with all modern comforts and a sitting/dining room at its heart that is warmed by an open fire. With a downstairs twin bedroom with TV and en suite shower, and a further double bedroom, a single bedroom with a seating area that has great views out over the Moray Firth and a bathroom upstairs, it provides conveniently configured and quite ideal holiday accommodation.
The shingle shore is just over the garden wall and the little shops, pubs and eating places of this tiny working village are within easy walking distance.
Locally, by car you can easily discover Rosemarkie, the prime dolphin-spotting site at Chanonry Point (where there is also an excellent golf course), the old town of Cromarty at the head of the peninsula and all this unspoilt, historic, scenically beautiful area.
The Black Isle is also famous for its birdlife. In the last few years red kites have been reintroduced into the area and can often be seen, particularly near the Tore roundabout and Munlochy Bay is a well-known haven for wading birds.
Children may be more interested in the long sandy beach at Rosemarkie (3 miles) with its community café, large play area and tennis courts. No visit to the area would be complete without a visit to the Black Isle Brewery, while for whisky lovers, there is a distillery at Muir of Ord.
To the north, the wonderful beaches at the pretty town of Dornoch are within an easy drive. A visit here could perhaps be combined with a visit to Dunrobin Castle (51 miles) with its towers and turrets, which hosts frequent events and falconry displays. The Glenmorangie and Balblair Distilleries are en route and whisky connoisseurs will be aware that the Clynelish Distillery at Brora is also nearby.
Further afield, the West Coast (Torridon, Gairloch and the Ullapool area), the Moray Coast, Loch Ness and even Skye can be visited. Alternatively, you can head due north and reach John O' Groats within a couple of hours, where, from Gill's Bay, you can take the ferry for a day trip to Orkney.
