On the north coast of the Highlands, right at the side of the Kyle of Tongue, sits Crann Tara. This substantial detached house sits in a raised position with magnificent sea views, just a mile and a half from the old crofting township of Tongue.

Crann Tara faces out towards the sea and is reached by a single track road. Inside it has been very elegantly refurbished to offer superb holiday accommodation in the most wonderful of settings.

At the back of the house you can park right at the door and enter into the large, bright entrance hall that has handy storage for boots, coats, etc. From there, the sitting room has tasteful, comfortable seating and soft furnishings that add clever splashes of Scottish charm. There is a large flat screen Smart TV (includes Freesat) and a traditional stone fireplace with solid fuel stove (that supplements the oil central heating) to keep you cosy whilst you relax in front of it.

The large, contemporary kitchen diner is bright and airy, with a dining area that has plenty of room for six. From this room in particular you can enjoy the beautiful sea views out over the Kyle of Tongue, which has been designated as an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'.

Towards the back of the house, all on one level, are the three bedrooms. There are two double bedrooms (the master of which is ensuite, with large built-in shower) and a twin room. The family bathroom is sleek and stylishly tiled, with a bath with shower over.

Crann Tara is the sister property of Crannag and sits within 10 acres of rough grounds. There are gravelled garden areas within the grounds, as well as a shallow natural pond (this is located away from the house, but care should be taken with very young children).

Map & Local

The main draw of this area is its gorgeous sandy beaches and beautiful clear turquoise waters. Just half a mile from the house is Coldbackie beach, a peaceful spot where you can swim, surf or just relax and take in the views out toward the Rabbit islands and the Orkney islands.

The quaint village of Tongue itself has two hotels, both with restaurants where you can enjoy afternoon tea or dinner. It has a grocery shop, PO, bank and petrol station, so most everyday demands are catered for. The nearest supermarket shopping is at Thurso (42 miles), so it is best to stock up before you arrive.

The North Coast 500 that is becoming known as ‘Scotland’s Route 66’ passes right by the house. This circular driving route is 516 miles long in total. While some enthusiasts aim to drive the entire route, others choose to take in the amazing scenery on shorter stretches nearby.

Fishing is available in some of the local trout lochs and you can even have a go at sea trout fishing. There is also a swimming pool and riding stables at Betty Hill (10 miles). For walkers and hill climbers there are the nearby mountains of Ben Hope (Munro) and Ben Loyal (Corbett) to tackle.
