Set in an elevated position to make the very most of its delightful, panoramic sea vistas is Croft Stones, a charming detached house near Helmsdale (5 miles) on Sutherland’s east coast.

Once inside the coastal scene is spread out before you in the incredibly spacious sitting room where the windows on three sides show off the views out across the surrounding croft land to the sea. At the heart of the room a wood-burning stove crackles away in a rustic stone feature fireplace, keeping everything nice and cosy while sliding doors open out to the pretty garden.

The kitchen is partly open plan to the lovely dining area, with further doors lead out to the garden, so it is ideal for enjoying lingering evening meals or planning the day’s activities over a hearty breakfast. Laundry facilities can be found in the utility room opposite the kitchen and there is also a modern shower room on this level.

A twin bedroom has been laid out downstairs and heading upstairs there are two more bedrooms. The double room has a window seat for further admiration of the gorgeous views and, as well as an en suite shower room, it has a dressing room/walk-in wardrobe with lots of useful storage. The second twin room has an en suite bathroom and yet more of those wonderful sea views.

A large garden surrounds the house with a patio and sloping grassed lawns with steep bankings in places (care to be taken with children). The driveway is also quite steep and curved so it should be driven slowly down to the parking area right by the door. There is parking at the top of the drive if preferred in adverse weather conditions.

Map & Local

Croft Stones is less than a mile from the scenic coastline that has beautiful, unspoilt sandy beaches dotted all along it that are often completely deserted. Sea fishing can be arranged by request or time can be whiled away walking, doing yoga on the sands or beachcombing for treasures.

The house also has access to a ‘secret beach’ in easy walking distance where seals can often be seen basking and you may well have the mile and a half stretch of sand all to yourself.

There is a small grocery shop in Helmsdale (5 miles) as well as a pub/restaurant and the Timespan Museum and Arts Centre that offers a fascinating insight into the town’s history and displays work from local and national artists.

Brora (7 miles) has a supermarket and a couple of eateries and with train stations in both Brora and Helmsdale it is easy to head into Inverness for a day trip, arriving in under 2 hours.

Golfers will be spoilt for choice with different courses to try out from the 9 hole course at Helmsdale to the 18 hole Championship Links Course at Brora that was designed by James Braid. Further down the coast at Dornoch (23 miles) the Royal Dornoch Club offers the choice of its Championship Course or Struie Course, both of which have 18 holes.

Mountain bikers will enjoy a visit to the Highland Wildcat Trails just outside Golspie (13 miles) where the longest singletrack descent in the UK can be tackled along with red or blue trails and a more family friendly cycle path for beginners.
