This warm and inviting cottage makes the ideal romantic retreat as it has been set up perfectly just for two. The main living area is open plan with a modern wood-burning stove with feature flue at its heart and comfy seating to curl up and admire it from. It is very light and bright due to the large French doors that lead out to the balcony and can be fully opened up to really ‘bring the outdoors in’.
The neat kitchen area is very well-equipped and even has a dishwasher so there is no washing up to worry about after relaxed evening meals at the little dining area. The cottage is all on one level with an attractive double bedroom with king-size bed and a very smart, contemporary wet room.
The peaceful and secluded balcony that wraps round the cottage is an idyllic place to sit and take in the view out over Pyatshaw Burn that runs by the garden (care to be taken). A little pathway leads from the parking area by the owner’s house right down to the cottage, with wonderful views out over the rolling countryside that can be appreciated even as you approach.
On the way to the cottage you drive under the Pyatshaw Archway, a Gothic stone archway which, along with its counterpart at Bruntaburn, is actually registered as a listed structure. The pair of arches originally marked the entrance to Spottiswoode House, which is unfortunately no longer standing.
The market town of Lauder (3.5 miles) has a golf course, grocery shop and PO, as well a supermarket/petrol station and a range of smaller independent shops. The Firebrick Brasserie offers a fine dining experience and there are also a couple of bar/restaurants that serve meals. Following the Lauder Town Trail will allow you to explore the town fully and find out about some of its past.
The impressive Thirlestane Castle (4 miles) is a grand, turreted castle dating all the way back to the 13th century that has been carefully and sympathetically restored to its former glory. It is steeped in history and guided tours are available of its fine furnishings, art and other treasures of the Maitland family who still live there to this day.
There is horse riding at Nenthorn (10.5 miles), a swimming pool and ice skating rink at Kelso (14 miles) and excellent mountain biking trails at the 7stanes centres at Innerleithen (24.5 miles) and Glentress (30 miles).
On the east coast near Eyemouth (28.5 miles) are several sandy beaches, with the long stretch of sand at Coldingham Bay (30 miles) being particularly picturesque.
The bustling capital city of Edinburgh (30 miles) is easily reachable in under an hour’s drive or you can take the train from Galashiels (13.5 miles) and arrive right into the heart of the city. There are many iconic sights to discover across the city from the imposing Edinburgh Castle to the Queen’s official Scottish residence Holyrood Palace, not to mention the plethora of shops, pubs and eateries on offer.
A mile from the city centre the Royal Botanic Gardens has over 70 acres to explore with an extensive array of rare plant life and knowledgeable guides that lead expert tours. There is skiing, snowboarding and tubing on the dry ski slope at the Midlothian Snow Sports Centre (30 miles).
