The cottage is set in a peaceful rural spot but with easy access to local amenities and in a good position for exploring the nearby towns and villages. At the heart of the house is the sitting room that has an electric stove to keep it nice and toasty with minimal effort.
Everything is easily to hand in the bright and airy dining kitchen that is perfect for eating together as the nominated cook doesn’t have to miss out on any of the fun. There is also a sunroom off the kitchen that catches the sun first thing so it’s a great place for enjoying your morning tea or coffee.
The main bedroom is attractive and light with a lovely original decorative fireplace and there is also a pretty single bedroom and a spacious wet room style shower room (with the added advantage of underfloor heating) all on the one level.
Outside parking is right by the door, the secure, enclosed garden is ideal for children to run around in and there is an outbuilding where the laundry facilities are kept.
The owner’s house is alongside with extensive gardens that lead right down to the water where guests are welcome to enjoy riverside walks or fish directly from the river bank (permit available via Fishpal).
A walking trail leads along the banks of the River Tweed and through the woods to Abbotsford House (1 mile) where you can tour around the rather grand former home of Sir Walter Scott himself. There is also a café to stop at for lunch or afternoon tea followed by a walk around the wonderful gardens that are particularly beautiful in the spring when the flowers burst into life.
The train station at Tweedbank (2.5 miles) is only 5 minutes’ drive away, providing effortless access up to Edinburgh in under an hour. Edinburgh is always a popular due to its wealth of shops, pubs, restaurants and, of course, its iconic sights such as Edinburgh Castle, the Scott Monument and Arthur’s Seat that towers over the city off in the distance.
Pop into Galashiels (2.5 miles) for supermarket shopping, a trip to the cinema or a meal in one of its many pubs and restaurants or head over to Selkirk (3.5 miles) for a round on its picturesque 18 hole golf course.
Melrose (3.5 miles) is a charming little town to wander around with lots of interesting little shops selling everything from craft supplies, glassware and antiques to jewellery and clothing. There is also a good butcher, an excellent fresh produce shop and a deli that has lots of tasty treats to choose from.
It is also home to one of four medieval Abbeys in the area with the others at Dryburgh, Jedburgh and Kelso in close reach for visiting. Melrose Abbey was founded in 1136 and was the first Cistercian Abbey in Scotland that remains remarkably intact to this day, standing in testament to the quality of its original construction.
