Old Howford Bothy is a romantic retreat that has been set up perfectly just for two. It sits in the hilly Peeblesshire countryside near the village of Innerleithen (3 miles) in the Scottish Borders countryside and is only 40 minutes’ drive from bustling Edinburgh.

This excellent cottage offers very bright and cosy accommodation set in its own garden just 100 yards from the wonderful River Tweed that is known for its salmon fishing (available locally by permit).
Inside, there is a comfortable and well-appointed open plan living area which is partly double height, giving it a tremendous feeling of light and space. At its very heart is the wood-burning stove that creates a snug atmosphere that is a real pleasure to return to after days spent out in the open air. The dining table has been set up alongside the window so that the views can be enjoyed while eating and the kitchen area is on the other side of the room. There is also a modern shower room on this level.
An open tread staircase leads up from the back of the sitting area to the charming galleried double bedroom, where the wood panelled ceiling, although coombed, still gives plenty of headroom.
The owners’ house adjoins the bothy so they are on hand for any queries but are happy to leave guests to enjoy the peaceful setting. With its wooded setting and being surrounded by a charming garden, The Bothy is sure to delight honeymooners and indeed anyone looking for a peaceful retreat amidst beautiful surroundings.
The bothy is backed by the Cardrona Forest and sits above the quiet secondary road which links the shops, hotels and pubs of the much-loved small town of Peebles (5 miles north of the cottage) to the large village of Innerleithen (3 miles south).
Innerleithen is home to one of the 7stanes mountain biking centres with challenging trails, some of which are now Enduro World Series tracks. The centre is only an easy cycle away along some quiet back roads or there is a regular bus shuttle service taking riders to the top of the trails.
Historic Traquair House, the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland, is an enjoyable 15 minute walk away. This whole area abounds in castles, stately homes, peel towers and abbeys, in addition to which there is all the glorious surrounding Border countryside just waiting to be discovered.
At nearby Glentress (3 miles) there is another of the 7stanes mountain bike centres, which is one of the most prestigious in the world with miles of forest tracks to explore and bike hire available. There are also TV screens where, in season, the osprey who nest in the neighbouring forests can be seen up close.
With Edinburgh under an hour's drive away, or 50 minutes by train from Galashiels (16 miles), the bothy is brilliantly placed for exploring both the city and the countryside. On the way take in Roslin Chapel that was made famous by its starring role in 'The Da Vinci Code' and is well worth a visit in its own right.
