Loch Awe, the longest freshwater loch in Scotland, runs south west from the A85 about 20 miles east of Oban and is one of the most beautiful and most photographed of the Scottish lochs, having the iconic ruin of Kilchurn Castle at its northern end. About a quarter of the way down its peaceful western shore and right on the water, is Achnacarron Boathouse.

Overview

The house stands in secluded, south-facing grounds with its own loch frontage and is reached by about a mile of meandering private track (some potholes and not suitable for low suspension vehicles) which will bring you to this haven of peace and tranquillity. A hunting lodge stood on this site for several centuries until 1954. The current property is an architect-designed, expertly refurbished and most comfortable house in a stunning lochside situation.

It is surrounded by lawned gardens and mature wooded areas and is sheltered by a variety of magnificent trees. There is parking alongside the house, which also has its own private pier, slipway and fishing rights. There is also access to a Canadian canoe, a kayak or a paddle board by arrangement. As you would expect in such a location there is an abundance of wildlife here, including deer, pine marten, red squirrels and otters and an even greater variety of birds, including barn owls and osprey.

Downstairs is bright, spacious and open plan, with dining and seating areas and a wood-burning stove, together with a door to a decked seating area above the water. The master bedroom, with en suite facilities, is also on this level, along with the kitchen, a utility room, a further bathroom and drying room. Upstairs are a further double bedroom and cosy lounge, with a glass wall to provide panoramic views over the water, both of which have coombed ceilings. Furniture and fittings are of the highest quality throughout.

Small, intimate weddings can be arranged down on the shoreline against the beautiful backdrop of the loch and the owner has all the local contacts needed to set this up.

As Achnacarron is one of our most popular properties, if it is already booked for the dates required then its nearby sister property Loch Awe Boathouse may be available.

Map & Local

For such a quiet and peaceful place you are nevertheless spoiled for choice for nearby eating places, such as the Taychreggan Hotel on the lochside. Just a little further up the road, for something very special, you also have the choice of the Ardanaiseig Hotel, one of the most prestigious in the country - a gastronomic experience not to be missed.

The cottage also makes an excellent base for the many things there are to do in the area. The loch itself offers fishing and sailing and there are walks of all levels of difficulty to be enjoyed in the surrounding mountains. For wet weather entertainment, you can go right inside one of them from the Cruachan Visitor Centre and see the hydro-electric station that was built in the heart of that mountain. Taynuilt (8m) has small shops (including an excellent general store), an hotel and a golf course and is on the shores of lovely Loch Etive where you can also visit the old Bonawe Ironworks.

There are superb beaches at Benderloch (turn north across Connel Bridge on the way to Oban), while Oban itself is a bustling port with all facilities including a rail station and from there you can take all kinds of boat trips, either to the islands or to view the marine wildlife in the surrounding waters. A particularly scenic, if slower route from Taynuilt to Oban is the back road through Glen Lonan.
