Once a simple croft house, it had been in the owner's family for generations and had become a much-loved holiday home for them. Now, however, it has been transformed with great style into a comfortable, full modernised and quite charming home which holiday makers too can enjoy.
To reach it, you leave the A828 Oban-Fort-William road at the village of Duror (shop and hotel) and take, for about a mile, the little single track road which winds round the bay to Cuil. The cottage stands in its own enclosed grass garden, looking across the field to the bay, which has one of the few sandy beaches on this stretch of the west coast.
At certain times of year the area round the bay becomes a regular feeding ground for migrating geese and the fields in front of the cottage can be full of them, another point of interest for those keen on ornithology.
The cottage always was a house with plenty character and only the impractical aspects of this have been lost in its refurbishment. The snug sitting room has a wood-burning stove, there is a completely new kitchen and a downstairs bedroom with en suite bathroom.
Steep stairs (care to be taken) lead to a further twin and a single bedroom that have low coombed ceilings. The house is therefore best suited for a couple or a small family, for children and adults alike will revel in the peace and freedom offered by this lovely location.
When it comes to seeing things and doing things during your stay, the house is not at all remote.
Once back on the main road, you can go north to Fort William, where Ben Nevis, skiing and mountain biking at Aonach Mor, or the Road to the Isles all beckon.
Closer still, at Ballachulish (10 miles) there is a golf course and you can turn right there into spectacular Glencoe, with all that legendary place has to offer in terms of walking, climbing and skiing. For a day out in less clement weather, the Ice Factor at Kinlochleven offers climbing walls, children's activities etc.
Ballachulish itself has a good hotel with a bistro for less formal dining. If it is seafood you crave, head east along Loch Leven to the Loch Leven Seafood Café, which combines the freshest of lobsters and clams with superb views across the loch. To the south, the Castle Stalker Visitor Centre provides excellent lunches and snacks and more amazing views. While Onich and Duror both have a shop, for major supermarket shopping Fort William will be the nearest.
Also to the south is Oban, a bustling holiday town and jumping off point for trips to many of the inner islands. Then again, much closer to the cottage at Appin (6 miles) there is riding at Lettershuna, the Sea Life Centre at Barcaldine and another fabulous sandy beach and karting at Benderloch.
