The transformation of this simple Hebridean cottage, on the shores of Loch Grosebay on the beautiful Isle of Harris, has been a real labour of love for the enthusiastic owners.

Once a tin-roofed, tin-walled, rather dilapidated bothy, the ugly duckling has become a swan indeed, having been re-roofed, triple glazed, heavily insulated, freshly painted and completely renovated inside. Holiday makers lucky enough to rent it will certainly have cause to marvel at its 'before and after' pictures.
Standing a little back from the quiet, single-track road, snuggling into the hill behind, with views of the inlet to the front it is a most desirable Hebridean hideaway for two people.
Inside, the attractive sitting room has an exposed feature stone wall and solid-fuel stove to keep it nice and cosy, as well as an attractive dining area. The modern and very well-equipped kitchen has plenty of space for cooking and even has a dishwasher so there is no need to debate over whose turn it is to do the dishes! The double bedroom has a pine clad ceiling and a romantic sleigh bed and there is a spacious shower room with large walk-in shower that completes the indoor accommodation.
Just alongside the cottage, what was once an ancient workshop has been transformed into a private sauna with superb views out over the loch. It works on a coin meter, so why not bring along your robes and some pound coins for that little extra treat.
Sgeir A'Chais is just as comfortable in winter as it is in summer - the owners have road tested it to make completely sure! The triple glazing, excellent insulation, electric blanket on the bed, effective electric heating from a 100% renewable source and most of all the cosy glow from the handmade Scottish stove ensure you'll be snug as can be, whatever the weather outside!
Outside, the cottage sits in a rough grassed garden (furniture) that is on several levels with a stream running through it (care to be taken).
The nearest place of any size is Tarbert (restaurants and shops), where the ferry docks from Uig on Skye, while down at the southern tip of Harris is Leverburgh, (small supermarket and restaurant), from where you can take a ship for North Uist and a spot of island hopping.
Harris is quite stunning with unspoilt white sandy beaches that meet the clear azure sea. On the east coast there are numerous rocky bays that lead to heather-clad hills dotted with small lochs. The little road on which the cottage stands forms part of the Harris Walkway, a 20 mile trail which runs from the slopes of 'the Clisham' to the west coast at Seilebost. There is plenty of wildlife to spot with golden eagles having been spotted at the North Harris Eagle Observatory, as well as many other species of birds.
Cycles can be hired locally, there are cruises around the neighbouring coastline and even the possibility of taking a day trip out to the World Heritage Site of lonely St Kilda, 40 miles out in the Atlantic - truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Northton is home to the Seallam Visitor Centre which houses the Western Isles Genealogy Research Centre, as well as some popular cafés. There is another excellent restaurant at Rodel, just a few miles beyond Leverburgh.
