Right on arrival at this special location guests will have their breath taken away by the expanse of sparkling water laid out before them. Inside, the main living accommodation is open plan with the sitting room, dining area and kitchen all in together meaning that everything is easily to hand and the chat doesn’t have to stop when mealtimes come around.
The wood-burning stove keeps the whole room nice and toasty and the large windows and glass front door have been cleverly chosen to make the absolute most of those stunning vistas. Seaforth island can be seen directly opposite and the view extends even as far as the Isle of Skye off in the distance.
A second wood-burning stove in the double bedroom allows cosy evenings to be drawn out even further and the stone feature wall, which matches the one in the bathroom, provides a dash of rustic charm. Another glass door allows the loch to be seen from bed and it can be opened up for some fresh air or to listen to the water lapping just outside. It really makes for the ideal start to each day.
Once settled in at the patio seating area the panoramic loch vistas make it rather difficult to leave, but a wander along the shoreline is surely in order. With few other people around it is quite likely that the shore will be completely deserted, or at least only shared with the wildlife that visit. How idyllic!
A steep 100 metre loose gravelled track, which can easily be negotiated with care, leads down to the cottage or there is the option of parking at the top of the drive and walking down if preferred.
Please note: To ensure availability of ferry tickets over to Lewis, it is recommended that guests book their tickets with CalMac ferries at the same time as booking their accommodation.
While there are no munros to tackle on Lewis there is the highest peak in the Outer Hebrides, Mount Clisham (8 miles), which is a corbett. It is well worth climbing for the amazing views alone, as the summit offers a truly unique perspective of the dramatic surrounding coastline.
At the top of the list of attractions to fit in has to be a visit to the Callanish Standing Stones (26 miles) further to the north of Lewis, which are often known as Scotland’s ‘Stonehenge of the North’. The stones actually pre-date Stonehenge and are said to have been standing to attention for over 5,000 years. They are shrouded in mystery as it is not known why there were erected but they are truly awe-inspiring.
Stornoway (23 miles) is the largest town in the Outer Hebrides and is best to head to in order to stock up on supplies. This bustling harbour town is home to an 18 hole golf course, butchers selling the famous Stornoway black pudding and impressive Lews Castle, which was originally called Seaforth Lodge.
Get some sand between the toes on the long stretch of beach at Luskentyre (23 miles) which seems to go on forever and has sea air that truly is unrivalled. Once that beach has been fully explored there are several more to head to in easy reach nearby. Seilebost (23 miles), Horgabost (24 miles) and Scarista (28 miles) are three of the most picturesque but there are enough dotted around to make every day a beach day.
Those looking to do some more island hopping will be happy to hear that from the island of Lewis, as well as venturing down into Harris, it is possible to jump on a ferry (from Harris) over to Berneray and from there use causeways to go further on to North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist.
