In an idyllic situation on the Lochshiel Estate near Acharacle on the lovely west coast of Scotland, Mary Ann's cottage is a traditional, whitewashed, Highland cottage and a real romantic hideaway.

Reached by a private estate road, it overlooks the water where the River Shiel flows out to the sea, with woodland behind. The cottage has been double-glazed and beautifully renovated with no sacrifice of its traditional character.

The living area is open plan, with a panelled, vaulted ceiling, stripped wood flooring and a wood-burning stove for added cosiness and ambience, while the panelled double bedroom has an exposed stone hearth which, while not in use, is a charming feature.

In short, it is a perfect waterside retreat for two. Velux windows have been cleverly added in the living room and bedroom to make it bright and airy. Within its thick walls, guests will be as snug and cosy as can be, with the prospect of all that amazing scenery which awaits them on the their doorstep.

Map & Local

The estate coastline offers many fine walks and sandy bays to enjoy. Castle Tioram, familiar from many calendars, is just a short distance away.

Acharacle offers shops and eating places and from there you can tour to north and south - north to the Road to the Isles, Arisaig and Morar, golf at Traigh, or a ferry hop over to Skye from Mallaig - south to Ardnamurchan with yet more glorious scenery and another ferry hop from Kilchoan to Tobermory on Mull.

Ardnamurchan Point is the westernmost point of mainland Britain, with a Stevenson lighthouse right at the tip. The road along there (turn west at Salen) is a delight in itself and en route you will pass the RSPB reserve at Glenborrodale, where in addition to many birds such as wood warblers and redstarts you may also see otters and red squirrels.

If you turn east at Lochailort, along Loch Eilt, you will come to historic Glenfinnan at the head of Loch Shiel, where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the beginning of the ill-fated Jacobite revolt of 1745. The site is owned by the National Trust and visitors can climb the memorial column there for a little bit of Scottish history.

From there, it is an easy journey back to Fort William, though do stop off on the way at Corpach to visit and stroll along the towpath at spectacular Neptune’s Staircase, where the Caledonian Canal debouches into Loch Linnhe.

Fort William provides a full range of entertainments for a rainy day, as well as boat trips on Loch Linnhe and, of course, the chance to climb Ben Nevis or go mountain biking (skiing in winter) at nearby Aonach Mor. For railway enthusiasts the steam train ‘The Jacobite’ makes a daily run in the season from Fort William to Mallaig and back.

Bed linen INCLUDED and towels available for hire by overseas guests only. The first £25 of electricity INCLUDED with any additional usage payable by meter reading at the end of your stay (electric car charging can be arranged separately at an additional cost). Heating is by electric storage heaters and wood-burning stove (starter pack INCLUDED). WiFi is INCLUDED for email checking and general web browsing. Not suitable for large downloads or high bandwidth applications (such as Skype, YouTube, Netflix, iPlayer/video streaming, etc). Water is from a private source which is UV filtered and regularly tested; however (as is typical in many parts of Scotland) it can become discoloured, particularly after heavy rainfall. Guests may therefore prefer to bring bottled water to drink. A maximum of 1 dog is welcome at an additional charge (1 medium or 1 small)*. If you wish to bring any other pets please contact us and we will see what we can do. No smoking. No infants.

*Please note: Pets should not be allowed in the bedrooms or on the furniture, or be left unsupervised in the property.
