Dating back to the 1850s, this church has been lovingly converted whilst maintaining plenty of it original character and charm, to create a relaxing hideaway with a handy open plan layout.
The main living area is double height with a wood-burning stove that keeps it nice and cosy and underfloor heating as an added bonus. Comfy seating has been placed around the stove for toe toasting and there is a dining area alongside, a neat kitchen area and French doors that lead out to the garden.
There is also a bunk bedroom, useful utility room and a bathroom with both a bath and a separate shower downstairs. The enchanting sea view can be further admired from the double bedroom that is set out on a mezzanine level.
From the garden the wonderful Cuillin mountain range on the Isle of Skye can be made out and, as it is fully enclosed, it is ideal for pets to run around in freedom.
Please note: due to its remote location there is no TV signal, mobile phone signal or WiFi at this cottage. Old Kilmory is not suitable for children under 6.
Just a short walk away are the wonderful white sands of Kilmory beach that is a great place to spend time walking, paddling or simply sitting admiring the great views out over Rhum, Eigg, Muck and Canna. There is also an incredibly beautiful beach at Sanna just half an hour’s drive away.
The nearest shop for supplies is in Kilchoan (6 miles) where there is an excellent restaurant in the Kilchoan Hotel. From the harbour it is just a 35 minute ferry ride over to picturesque Tobermory on the Isle of Mull for a day trip to explore its delights.
The peninsula is known as a wildlife haven so there is plenty to look out for from red squirrels and pine martens to deers and otters. Some are even lucky enough to see one of the magnificent golden eagles that soar overhead with an impressive wing span of up to 2 metres!
Hill walkers will enjoy climbing up to the highest point of the peninsula at the summit of Ben Hiant (6 miles) and there are lots of other walking routes paths to try nearby.
At the most westerly point of mainland Scotland sits Ardnamurchan Lighthouse (12 miles) that has been in operation since 1849 and is still in use to this day as well as a fascinating exhibition on its history. It is possible to climb all the way to the top to take in the breathtaking seascape although it is incredibly pretty even from the ground with the chance to see dolphins and whales out at sea.
Whisky lovers will want to visit the Ardnamurchan Distillery at Glenbeg (9 miles). As it is a relatively new distillery its first whisky won’t be on sale until 2022 but the tours that explain the distillation process are very interesting and preview tastings are available.
