Overview

Badachro, some 6 miles south of Gairloch (with shops and hotel), is a small village which straggles round the bay, with a famous inn on the lochside serving excellent meals. In a spectacular location overlooking the bay and within a short walk of the inn is Hillcrest, a traditional, stone-built cottage that sits in its own enclosed garden.

From this vantage point you can spend lazy afternoons watching the yachts enter and leave the harbour or the changing light on the distant mountains across the bay.

Inside the house has been attractively and comfortably furnished. The sitting room, with its cheerful open fire, has a large bay window which affords excellent views over the front garden, village and bay. Chances are guests will want to turn the chairs around in daylight hours and drink in the vista before them. The furnishings are a pleasant mixture of traditional and modern, while the two ‘Monarch of the Glen’ pictures make it impossible to forget that you are in the western Highlands.

The modern kitchen has a separate dining area, which is probably where most meals will be taken for reasons of sheer convenience. For special meals the separate dining room, with a piano and a wood burning stove, also gives the opportunity for the party to spread out for different activities. Also on this level are a pretty double bedroom and a wet room with a bath and shower.

Upstairs there are two further bedrooms, a double and a twin (with beds that can be pushed together to make a double) and a shower room and WC. The bedrooms are all simply but pleasantly furnished and having bathroom facilities upstairs and down makes for maximum practicality. There is also an additional Z-bed available by prior arrangement.

Outside there is parking right at the door and an extensive enclosed grassed garden (with furniture and BBQ) with stunning loch views beyond it. The chalet in the garden is available for secure storage of bikes and other equipment.

Map & Local

This region will need no introduction to climbers and walkers, as the famous mountains of Torridon, such as Stac Pollaidh and the Coigach are close by.

You can take the amazing coastal walk from where the road ends at Red Point, just down the coast, round to Diabaig. Trout fishermen and sea anglers will find plenty scope here, with pony trekking and a golf course at Gairloch.

Boat trips leave from Badachro itself to see the marine wildlife in the surrounding waters. You can go creel fishing, or take a trip with a ghillie on Loch Maree to visit Isle Maree, the sacred 'Island of the Moon'.

In addition to all facilities, Gairloch also has a nearby beach, aptly named Big Sand, where families can spend many happy hours. Garden enthusiasts will need no encouragement to visit the famous sub-tropical gardens at Inverewe, a reminder of just how much the climate in this part of the world owes to the Gulf Stream. Further to the north, there are more wonderful beaches at Gruinard.

This is an area ripe for exploration. At the head of Loch Maree is the Beinn Eighe nature reserve, while a day trip down to Skye or the Applecross Peninsula is another possibility. To the north, the landscape is one of the most impressive in Britain. The bustling fishing port of Ullapool again offers boat cruises, a golf course, leisure centre and also hosts at least two lively music festivals each year.

Beyond, there is the opportunity to branch off to picturesque Achiltibuie, which overlooks the Summer Isles, or from that road turn north to take the ‘wee mad road’ through heart-stoppingly lovely scenery, to Lochinver.
