This former crofter’s cottage has been extended and updated to create a warm and inviting holiday home that is cleverly arranged to make the most of its pretty coastal situation. The wonderful vista that can be seen from the sitting/dining room is quite captivating and the stone feature wall behind the cosy wood-burning stove adds an interesting focal point to this inviting room. There is an additional snug next door with comfy seating looking right out towards the seashore and mountains beyond.
Everything is easily to hand for whipping up some culinary delights in the light and bright kitchen that is presented in lovely soothing tones. Off the kitchen is a sunroom where the scenery can be further appreciated in comfort whatever the weather and doors open out to the patio area and outdoor seating.
A steep, narrow staircase leads upstairs where the two attractive double bedrooms are laid out, along with a handy WC that supplements the smart shower room downstairs.
To the front of the cottage lies a sloping grassed garden from which it is fascinating to watch the ever-changing sea views as the light dances on the water. On a good clear day it is even possible to see as far as the islands of Lewis and Harris off in the distance. Plenty of parking space is by the door and an outbuilding provides useful secure storage.
This coastline is dotted with scenic, sandy beaches with the nearest being the excellent one just quarter of a mile away at Gruinard Bay. It is a truly idyllic spot with golden sands and clear waters as well as otters to spot and seals that like to sun themselves out on the rocks.
The nearby Ocean View Hotel is a good stop-off point for a drink or a meal whilst out and about. A well-stocked shop/PO can be found at Laide (2 miles) and they can take telephone orders for collection which is a good time saver. It is also the place to head to for permits for fishing in various lochs on the Aultbea Estate.
Aultbea (5 miles) has a few shops and a café and the Russian Arctic Convoy Museum in the village offers a fascinating insight into the area’s military ties with Russia during the second World War. Nearby Ewe Canoe offers canoeing and kayaking adventures that allow people with all different levels of abilities to enjoy getting out on the water exploring.
It is well worth taking a trip to Inverewe Garden (10 miles) near Poolewe to see some of the unusual species of plants that thrive there due to the warm microclimate created by the Gulf Steam. The huge redwood trees are particularly impressive and, in season, azaleas, rhododendrons and other flowers burst into life creating a delightful riot of colour.
There are various eateries to try out in Gairloch (16.5 miles) where there is a lovely 9 hole golf course and another picturesque beach with great views over Loch Gairloch to the Isle of Skye.
