This spacious house, which was once a traditional fisherman’s cottage, has been lovingly refurbished and transformed into a stylish, contemporary holiday getaway that is ideal for both family and friends.
The generously-sized kitchen/dining room is a sociable place to catch up on the day’s activities of an evening and, once the large glass doors are opened up, the patio dining area becomes an extension of the space. Its Rangemaster cooker is a delight to cook on and the huge, American style fridge freezer has tonnes of storage.
In the inviting sitting room the wood-burning stove makes a welcome focal point and keeps everything nice and cosy. A handy, en suite double bedroom has been laid out downstairs so those with limited mobility don’t need to worry about the stairs and there is also a utility room/WC.
On the bright landing at the top of the stairs a charming reading nook has been created as a quiet bolthole to take some time away and finally finish that holiday novel. The master bedroom is beautifully presented with added luxuries in the form of a king-size bed and a colourful, free-standing bath in the room itself. The indoor accommodation is completed by a light and airy twin bedroom and a modern shower room.
From the patio area steps lead up the slope behind the house with another patio from which the loch and mountains beyond can be seen. As is traditional in Plockton, the rest of the garden is set across the road from the house. Step through the gate into the idyllic oasis of the lush garden complete with its own palm trees for a tropical vibe.
Fabulous Plockton is known as the ‘jewel of the Highlands’ and it is easy to see why on the short wander into the heart of the village. The local cows seem to find it quite picturesque themselves as they often relax on the grass by the loch shore without a care in the world.
The village shop just along the road also has a restaurant and, as may be expected from a coastal eatery, its menu features lots of fresh, local seafood. If the more traditional seaside fare of fish and chips is more to one’s taste, there is a takeaway at the other end of the harbour.
Boat trips are a popular choice of activity in the area with the chance for a close-up look at some of the resident colonies of seals that bask on the rocks around the loch shore. Those looking to get out on the water can give stand-up paddle boarding or sea kayaking a try and the Plockton Visitor Centre by the harbour houses interesting information on the village’s history.
A walking trail leads from the village out to a gorgeous and usually secluded coral beach that benefits from the pleasantly warm effects of the gulf stream.
Kyle of Lochalsh (6 miles) is the nearest place for supermarket shopping or heading out on a glass-bottomed boat trip to see what delights lie beneath the surface of the water. Whilst in Kyle of Lochalsh it is a good opportunity to pop over the bridge to the Isle of Skye for a day trip spent exploring and sightseeing.
