Overview

Skylark Cottage is a charming thatched black house that occupies a lovely elevated position in Upper Breakish on the stunning Isle of Skye, just 5 miles from the Skye bridge.

This cosy retreat is ideal for a romantic break, or honeymoon, combining modern comforts with a very traditional setting that makes a great base for exploring the island. The cottage is named after the skylark with its distinctive sing song call and little crest.

Inside the cottage is warm and welcoming with the sitting room at the heart of the house being dominated by the wonderful views out over Broadford Bay from the French doors. Everything needed for whipping up some culinary delights is easily at hand in the kitchen which also has a dining area for enjoying evening meals together.

The cottage is set out all on one level with an attractive double bedroom and a modern shower room that completes the indoor accommodation.

Outside the little paved patio area is the perfect place from which to sit and admire the wonderful views out towards the isles of Pabay, Scalpay and Raasay. The stones that hang from the roof are used to protect the thatch from any windy weather.

Map & Local

The sandy beach at Ashaig is in easy walking distance with a range of birdlife to look out for and wonderful the outline of the Red Cuillins off in the distance that is particularly dramatic at sunset.

Low levels of light pollution in the area offer ideal conditions for star gazing and perhaps catching a glimpse of the wonderful Northern Lights in the right conditions.

For a night off from cooking the Red Skye restaurant is just a couple of minutes’ walk away and at Lower Breakish (0.5 miles) Skyak Adventures arrange sea kayaking excursions that are a good way to see the island from one of its best vantage points – the sea. Another very special way of seeing Skye’s magnificent scenery is from one of the sea plane tours that run from the nearby airfield (1.5 miles).

Broadford (2.5 miles), the second largest village on the island, is the place to stock up on supermarket supplies and petrol, etc. Boat trips head from Elgol (16.5 miles) out to beautiful Loch Coruisk with lots of wildlife including golden eagles, dolphins, basking sharks and even minke whales.

Munro baggers will want to head to Glen Sligachan (19 miles) which separates the Red and the Black Cuillin mountain ranges. There are 12 munros to choose from with some low level walks and more serious climbs that require specialist equipment. Even if you don’t like walking/climbing the spectacular mountain views are truly captivating.

No visit to Skye would be complete without a trip to Portree (28 miles) to see the quaint coloured houses that line the picturesque harbour there. Just outside Portree there are a range of activities to try at Ace Sky including clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintball and axe throwing!

As the bridge is so accessible it is easy to pop back across and visit some of the seaside villages on the coast such as Plockton with its pretty palm tree lined harbour and annual sailing regatta.
