Adhair-Mara means ‘sea air’ and it is easy to see why it was chosen given the amazing location that the house occupies. The stylish sitting room at its heart is very spacious and bright and the views have really been made the most of as the whole gable end is made of glass to show them off fully. A neat little wood-burning stove keeps it all nice and cosy and as it is all laid out on the one level, everything is easily to hand.
Having the contemporary kitchen with its useful central island and the dining area in together creates a great space for socialising that is supplemented by a handy little laundry room outside.
The luxurious master suite has the benefit of a dressing room (with additional futon) and an en suite bathroom with the choice of a lovely free-standing, double-ended bath or a modern walk-in shower. French doors open up to the deck so the seascape can be admired from bed and the second attractive bedroom has an equally stunning view through its full height window.
To the rear of the house, the seating on the raised deck is the perfect spot to sit and absorb the beautiful surroundings. Steps then lead down to the rest of the grassed garden that slopes down towards the rocky shoreline that is just a short stroll away.
The pretty grounds extend to around an acre with lots of mature plants and trees and yet more gorgeous views over the Sound of Sleat to the mountains of the mainland beyond. Plenty of parking is provided at the front of the house and, as there is a pond and a small burn in the garden, care should be taken with children.
Sleat is known for its array of wildlife with otters often having been seen on the shore in front of the house. Sea eagles may also be spotted, as well as dolphins and minke whales out in the sparkling waters.
The Sleat peninsula is a haven for foodies with several good quality restaurants nearby including Toravaig House (1.5 miles), Duisdale House (5 miles) and Kinloch Lodge (7.5 miles). The hotel at Isleornsay (4 miles) also has bar meals or more formal dining in its restaurant to sample.
Just along the road the Torabhaig Distillery (1.5 miles) produces an excellent peated single malt whisky. It is only the second distillery on the island and is relatively new having only been in production since 2017. Distillery tours are available and there is also a café and shop on site.
Fresh local produce and tasty treats can be picked up from the farm shop at Armadale (3 miles) and Broadford (13 miles) is the place for supermarket shopping. Whilst at Armadale the ruins of Armadale Castle are worth a visit with delightful gardens full of colourful flowers and interesting sculptures that are a joy to wander around.
The sandy beach at Ord (6.5 miles) is a great place for a scenic walk no matter what the weather and if a visit can be timed to fit in with the sunset it is an incredibly beautiful view. Climbers will want to tackle the famous Cuillin mountains and South Skye Sea Kayaks run expeditions out on the water for those looking to explore a bit further.
