Sitting off the beaten track within the extensive Airlie Estate is East Campsie Cottage, a rural hideaway that makes for the perfect escape, set amidst the natural beauty of the gorgeous Angus Glens near Blairgowrie (11.5 miles).

Situated down half a mile of rough farm track, this charming cottage is south-facing so it gets sunlight for most of the day. The heart of the house is definitely the airy and bright sitting/dining room where time can be spent relaxing in front of the wood-burning stove that is an attractive focal point and also keeps everything toasty.

Partly open plan to the sitting/dining room is the colourful, dual aspect kitchen and there is a handy little utility room, with a WC off it, at the entrance that provides space to do laundry and air out wet jackets and coats on the drying rack.

The spacious downstairs double bedroom has pretty, country views to admire from its windows and benefits from a bright en suite shower room, while the neat twin bedroom makes use of the family bathroom. Upstairs is a large twin bedroom and a useful snug/reading room leading through to it, which is a great place for the kids to separate off into.

A huge lawn stretches out in front of the house with farmland beyond it where sheep and horses graze serenely. Plenty of parking space can be found by the back door and care should be taken at the edge of the garden (particularly with children) as there is a steep bank leading down to a stream. It is a truly idyllic setting with only the sounds of the birds singing and the stream trickling by punctuating the quiet.

Map & Local

The Airlie Estate is run by the Ogilvie family and extends to over 30,000 acres with great efforts put into the conservation of its wonderful array of rare flora and fauna. It is a real wildlife haven with red squirrels, otters, beavers and even wildcats amongst the species that can be spotted.

Lovely walks can be had through the Den of Airlie nature reserve, designated as a SSSI (site of special scientific interest), where the River Isla and Melgam Water converge. Fishing can be arranged within the estate and munro baggers will be spoilt for choice with 10 munros to take on within the Angus Glens.

Kirriemuir (7 miles) is the place to head for supermarket shopping or a meal at one of its eateries. Magnificent Glamis Castle (8.5 miles) can’t help but impress on the approach with its charming turrets that give it a quintessential fairy tale feel. Every June, the grounds of the castle play host to the Strathmore Highland Games that draw in spectators from far and wide to witness exciting heavy events such as hammer throwing and tossing the caber.

Rounds of golf can happily be slotted into the agenda with an 18 hole course at Alyth (5.5 miles) to take on, three courses to choose from in Blairgowrie (11.5 miles) and the iconic Carnoustie Golf Links (25 miles) in easy reach over on the coast.

With so many other activities to try out nearby it can be hard what to decide what to do next. The hides at the Loch of Kinnordy Nature Reserve (5 miles) allow for a close up look at the amazing birdlife (including stunning ospreys in spring), there is walking and climbing in Glen Clova or the Cairngorms National Park (17 miles) and Dundee is only a 40 minute drive away for a day trip. Once in the city the V & A museum is just one of the numerous attractions that are well worth exploring.
